... in the early 19th century, what people do you think will still be recognizable to a significant number of Americans 500 years from now? What about 1,000?

Do you think Americans in 2520 or 3020 are likely to recognize a picture of Lincoln, Hitler, Churchill, JFK, Elvis, Einstein, MLK, or Michael Jordan? How long until their faces and names are unrecognizable to the vast majority of Americans?

Majority of people right now have no clue who Jerry Garcia is, much less recognize a picture

Washington and Lincoln are here to stay long term especially since they’re on money (assuming money as we know it still exists in the same form).

Einstein’s unique appearance and his contributions will likely have 500 year recognizability.

Aside from that:
Obama and Trump (recency bias for sure, but I think both may have long term lasting power)
Hitler most likely based on his atrocities and his Hitler ‘stache

Sports:
Not sure if any will last hundreds of years.
Maybe the billions of Chinese will recognize Yao Ming.
Even as for Jordan and Lebron... man I don’t know. Past another 100 years they will all start to blend together (even the great ones). I don’t think any football or baseball players stand a chance (maybe Babe Ruth??). Would probably have to be someone who is in conversation as a potential GOAT and have somewhat of a standout appearance.

If the inventor knew that selfies would become the fruit of his labor, do you think he would’ve said “frick this”?

there will be no America 100 years from now, much less 500 or 1000 years.

A 1000 years is a long time for nations. I doubt America or many of the world’s nations are still around 1000 years from now.

Out of that group I’d say Hitler and Einstein might be commonly recognized. Probably not any athletes.

The Mona Lisa is still widely recognized (although we aren't sure who the model was). Henry VIII is still remembered based on his portrait.

Photography = better accuracy and more copies, so Washington and Lincoln will likely still be recognized. Even if there's no USA in 500 years, the US is historically important. The Roman Empire is still remembered 1500 years after its demise.

Even though there are no photographs of Washington, the recognition of his likeness should last as long as there is an America as we know it.

Lincoln has comparable staying power. A memorable appearance (tall, top hat, beard) and a big arse statue of him facing the capitol will help him with future generations.

Possibly.

Being the first of something significant helps a lot and gives the world reason to remember you. Obama is the first black president and that should extend his legacy longer than most presidents.

I think GWB will last longer than Trump due to his association with 9/11.

Probably... but certainly in Europe.

If baseball is as popular 500 years from now as it is today and the New York Yankees are still America's most famous sports team, I think a good number of Americans will recognize Babe Ruth. Hell, his prime was 100 years ago and he's still very much a sports icon.
