And most of the houses there don't come with central heating/AC.

Always got to have something for yourself, but will vote entirely opposite of this mindset.
What the hell are you talking about? California has some of the best high schools and definitely the best public university system in the country.

If you're rich.
Not so much for everyone else.

Well yeah the better the area the more demand there will be, therefore there will be a higher price.

Damn. My house would be around five million in that market. How in the hell do people live there?
Tech companies pay corporate HQ employees very, very well.

Depends on the area and age of house.

I’m not sure wanting the best education for your kids is a liberal vs conservative issue.

Forget the house you are paying for 1.9M for the land. The house is free.
Honestly that house is a good candidate to be torn down and a nice two story modern house built with say 2,400 sq ft. You could probably make a lot by doing that. Would be a 5 million property after.

Not sure what the tear down value would be. That lot looks tiny in the photo and they have some very restrictive building ordinances out there. You probably aren't putting a McMansion on that tiny piece of turf and even tearing it down is going to be a bureaucratic nightmare.
Also people need to remember that the Bay Area housing bubble isn't just a product of high tech salaries. Chinese kleptocrats have been laundering their pilfered money there for years. I remember somebody did a piece where they analyzed the recent buyers in a zip code and half of them were shell companies owned by Chinese nationals. That's how all of those corrupt government officials over there hide their loot. Bank accounts anywhere can be frozen and seized, but American real estate is the safest harbor in the world, and the values in the bay area just keep going up, up, up.

I'd sell the frick outta that house and move to Tejas or Florida

If I could just figure out how to transplant my house to silicon valley, I'd have a $6.5 million house!!!!

A prof of mine got his PhD from Stanford and said (during a typical sweltering hot and humid summer) that the climate at Stanford was never hot or cold and never too humid or too dry. He was from Missouri and had served in Korea and he regretted ever leaving the area around Stanford.

I was talking about school quality, not real estate prices.

Unreal, however NYC, Upstate NY, Virginia, DC and the tri-county area in South Florida, are right behind.

(her house was in the style of the house on the right)
Another couple bought my other grandma's house in Sunnyvale and tore out her amazing backyard garden and layed the whole backyard in concrete.

This is our old house in Palo Alto. It sold for $1.5 MM or something stupid last time it was sold but as someone who grew up there I'm just glad the area is still recognizable.
