Y’all need to be asking SID and the leaders of the department who you’re jumping up to hand all this money to. Give these guys a pay raise, absolutely. Put it on the ballot as its own thing and I’ll vote for it. Better yet, do the work to get the public on board with their own dedicated tax. Same way the library did the work 30 years ago. But doing it under the guise of moving this money to his boosters as some kind of magic solution to the crime problem is foolish. They can’t run a press conference but they want us to believe they can pull this off. We’re going to look back in 4 years with similar crime stats and a library that once again looks like it did back in the 80’s. Mark my words.

thats all great as a deflection. But you didn't answer my questions. You're shooting down the Mayor's plan and his rationale behind it. Offer a solution to the crime currently plaguing BR. .

1) What rationale? Dude didn’t do any due diligence before pushing ahead with this mess of a rollout.

2) I’m not sure what you want me to say? If you recall, I’m the guy who asked the question “how are they gonna do this?” They need to tell the taxpayers their plan if they want this money. That’s how it works! It’s not a deflection, it’s accountability.

I’m currently opposed to using library money for these things…key word being currently…until someone can make a real plan on how this is going to realistically fix the broken police department and solve the crime problem. Money is a start, but it takes way, way more than that to fix a culturally ingrained crime problem that’s been festering for 20-30 years. It gives me pause when they play on our emotions to get plans like this across (e.g., aren’t you AFRAID of crime, why don’t you want us to be SAFE again, etc.) I want us to have a Cadillac PD and PL. But I’m not swayed to put one on the chopping block if I don’t yet trust the other to be a good steward of the funds.

I agree

Photo of typical young family looking at their property tax bill from the EBR Sheriff at the end of year.

They also pay like 10% sales tax, ridiculous mortgage for $250K house, extremely high car and house insurance (thanks to lawyers like Gordon and Dudley and Doosh Bag) and also trying to save to send that young one to private school one day because our public schools don't teach.

Cleve Dunn and Jen Raca just raised their Entergy Bill by 5% too.

Just wait in 30 years when their baby is their age, his property tax bill will be like $8000 or triple what we pay now.

VOTE FOR MORE PROPERTY TAXES

I live in SG so I’ll pass on that, but I am still in EBR and all of EBR is going to face some tough decisions.

Parish issues that we will be asked to address include storm water, the parish prison, the parish juvenile detention center, the DA, and the River Center initiative. I’ve also heard rumblings that the Sheriff wants more.

I think we need to review everything and get a full review of all these special tax authorities to see if we can adjust the millages and vote for new millages.

BREC
The Library
COA
Mental Health
MARC
Schools

We need to look at it all not just libraries.

BR needs to do the same thing.

Fair enough, but that doesn;t address the crime problem now. I'm not picking on Shortsguy. But while everyone is bitching about the proposed solution nothing is getting done. And when it comes to this specific problem- BR crime- it needs to be addressed with expediency. BR is a sewer (crime-wise) and none of the surrounding areas are immune to the stench. So maybe get something done to address this problem now (hire more police) and worry about fixing the entire system later. Even if the library has to take a cut in the process. Because all the bitching about the library money and demands to address BREC, COA, CATS, etc. isn't going to address the crime in the short term. And crime is what is the most pressing issue.

True, but the mayor is trying to move money now to hire cops now. I don’t agree with that idea, but that is what he’s doing along with bringing in Chief LeDuff and others for advice.

But if anyone thought that in 50 days he was going to fix things they had to be smoking something. The police force had been undermanned and under paid for years now. Throw in Broome’s lack of support and judges that won’t put people in jail and the problems became enormous.

Unfortunately, only special interests show up and bully law makers and council reps to pass these ridiculous taxes because the silent majority is too busy having a life and working to pay their taxes and raise a family. Meanwhile, the only people showing up at these public feel good meetings or the metro council meetings are library workers or nerds sent by Jill Stein to push for her unlimited piggy bank. The damn library still gonna get like $38 million. $18 million will cover their worker salaries who do nothing all day and still give them $20 million to pay for other crap we don't need like free 80 cent pens and free phone chargers being thrown from their Mardi Gras Float. Also that $20million can be used to host more Drag Queen Reading Hour for six and seven year olds. Nevermind all the old lonely people in nursing homes who would appreciate a drag queen reading a book to them. Seems like drag queens only want to read to children.

You just spout a lot of stupid shite so you have proven you don’t understand how things actually work.

Maybe if you spent a little time with those so called “nerds” in a library you would learn what you obviously didn’t in 8th grade Civics class. How governments function within a society.

This is an interesting turn of events. some years ago, the library needed more money so they proposed a library tax that would raise $xx million, and the good citizens of EBR passed the tax. As soon as the tax passed, EBR council reviewed their budget and decided to cut $xx million from their appropriations for the library.

we paid more in taxes, the library's budget was unchanged, and EBR freed up $xx million to spend on things we didn't plan on funding. Now Coach is going to go back to the well and spend the money we intended to be for the library for more things we didn't agree to support when we passed the library tax.

It doesn't feel right.
