Can someone please explain the overly circuitous route the shuttles take from rental to terminal. I can make no sense of this. I could drive to Laplace in the time it takes.

How else do you get around the airfield?

There is a partially competed tunnel under the airfield but that shall remain forever partially completed

the rental cars are on the side of the airport with the old terminal...no plan to move rental cars that I know of.

It's such a great, well thought out place.

The rental car center opened shortly before they decided to build the new airport.

I was in the shuttle last week and watching people's faces and hearing their confusion about the rental car situation was a fun diversion.

How often do you fly? Lots of airports require a shuttle to reach the rental car center.

I'd love to meet the genius who decided that a tunnel in the N.O. area was a decent idea. Did they not bother to investigate the nightmares associated with the few other tunnels in Louisiana?

True, but I'm not sure how many bring you along the backside of some gross canal and beat down industrial park, and then through an abandoned airport.

It is pretty crazy they can't just build a road on the interior path and put whatever fencing is required?

Have they never traveled outside of Bougalusa International?

Riding a shuttle to rental cars is pretty normal.

I travel a lot for business and OP is right, the time it takes to shuttle back and forth from the rental car center at MSY is beyond ridiculous.

Are you wanting to drive straight across the runways?

You been thru any of those recently? One, in fact, is on it's last few days.

How about the fact that it looks like you’re being taken through a third world nation.

You have to cross a runway.

Now, I've thought, MSY isn't THAT busy. Why not just build a road that crosses a runway, and put train-type gates on either side of the crossing. When a plane is about to take off or land, the gates lower and the rental car bus has to wait. Then, after it passes, gates go up and bus passes.

I don't know if there are road maintenance issues with driving across a runway. But I would think professional drivers could handle this.
