Opinion piece, but interesting to consider.

The industrial canal serves two purposes, these days - neither of which is a river to lake connection that it was intended to be.

1) A number of companies reside along the canal, and use the canal for access.

2) The bigger part of use is as part of the intracoastal canal system (the part from the intracoastal waterway south of I-10, to the river").

The lock is absolutely outdated, and it's in a terrible location.

I always wondered if a new waterway should be built 15-20 miles downriver.

I hate stupid hindsight articles like that... It was built 100 years ago because it was needed.. There was more barge traffic in the lake back then...

Yeah, just shut Folgers down and fill it in...

Now the MRGO... That's a different story...

In New Orleans, this would take 96 years, and cost $400 trillion

And that’s just for the feasibility report, environmental impact report, 10 year study on freshwater sharks, etc

I know a little about the canal, a few points.....

1 - the Port of New Orleans owns most of the property along the canal which they lease out to tenants

2 - you can't mess with the port, thats some serious folks.

3 - I think the port is doing some community planning on how to best, safety use the canal properties in the future.

4 - Even if that land is "development" ready, most of those properties should and will never be anything other than maritime or industrial use

5 - a lot of that property is inside the floodwall, so it can flood

6 - you can't mess with the port, those are some serious folks

Just to dredge claim shells out the lake which almost killed it.

Fill it in. It was screwed from day one along with MRGO. I fished that area and shrimp it, and even with to jail doing that.

I get you can't mess with the port... them some powerful people.

Does Folgers use the waterway?

If you kept the water there, interior beach =)

Honestly though, like the MRGO, I'd build a wall on each side and be done with it.

The IHNC Lock is part of the GIWW (Gulf Intracoastal Waterway). If you remove the lock, you remove the eastern transit point for the GIWW. The lock mostly accommodates industry not physically located along the IHNC.

How many NOLA businesses actually use it.. as opposed to boats just passing through?
