Should I rebuild my floor jack or just buy another 1

I have a Craftsman #50145 floor jack that I bought years ago. I haven't had a reason to use it in years. I bought an 2002 Tahoe because my 12 year old son wants to learn the basics about working on cars.
Pull it out and the handle won't turn. Messed around with it for a while with a hammer and lube and got it to turn. But it won't stay up.
I priced some and a newer version from sears is around $150.
Should I just buy a new for my son to have or just fix this old 1 and give it to him.

I got a 3-ton from Harbor Freight for like $75, and have had no issues to with it.

If you plan to have your 12 year old son around a vehicle being held up by a floor jack you can’t trust to stay up, $150 sounds like a wise investment.
And nice job teaching your son the basics of a vehicle. He’ll appreciate you for it.

Go to harbor freight and get a new one, but before you throw it out have him take it apart to see what makes it tick.

not worth the money you are saving. Some of their stuff is good but I got afloor jack from them a while back and it sucked, gave way way under its capacity

You should never have to trust a floor jack.

Knock Harbor Freight all you want but the wrenches and ratchet sets a bought from there have held up pretty good.
and im pretty sure Craftsman is made in China now anyway

They have different grades of everything that comes from China. All in the specs.

While I agree harbor freight is cheap Chinese shite, the jack I have from them is going on 10 years old and still does great. I wouldn't expect it to hold up in a professional environment, but taken care of there isn't a lot that can go wrong on them.

Walmart has a 2 ton for only $49. Not worth the time to rebuild one.

For a Tahoe, a high lift Jack would be more beneficial than a low profile jack.
And those Haynes or Chiltons repair manuals are a great tool for learning.

this. jack stands or one better 6x6 blocks of wood. Rebuild the jack if the whole point of buying the tahoo was to teach him how to turn a wrench.
