I lived in C-town from 1991-2000 and really enjoyed my time there. I was travelling quite a bit for work at the time and would meet people on flights and they would ask where I lived. When I said Cleveland, most would start going on and on about how bad it was to live there.
I made it a point to ask them if they had ever lived or spent any amount of time there and they of course would say that they hadn't. So much for informed opinions.
I think most of these people get there opinions for David Letterman.
We had Cavs and Indians season tickets during this time and those teams were exciting to watch.
The big negative about Cleveland is not so much how cold it is, but how little sun you see in the winter months. They don't call them grey flannel skies for nothing. The summers, however are great since it's cool at night and it never really gets too hot.
When we moved to BR in 2000, my wife from western NY asked what the weather would be like. I told her moving from Cleveland to La we would trade six months of winter for six months of summer. Pretty accurate.
Cleveland is 22nd in population of major cities, but 5th in corporate headquarters, so it has a lot of money.

I live 25 min from Cleveland lot of cool stuff to do in and around the city, just dont get caught in the wrong part of town. But hell that rule applies to any major town. Also there minor league team the crushers are a better time than the indians games for a whole lot less cash.

shite - being less than a day's drive from NYC (7 hours)
Someone really drives fast apparently. It would take at least 11 hours to get NYC, probably 12.

Indianapolis wasn't bad at all, aside from the merciless cold.

I like both cities.
Indy is a lot more "new", doesn't have the same culture. Indy and Columbus are actually just about mirrors of each other. Indy is a great host city for things. The area surrounding it is pretty boring though...flat farmland.
Cleveland has a lot of old money and culture. Surprisingly higher cost of living. World class airport. Rock Hall. Amazing sports city (but Indy is great as well). NE Ohio has a lot of great food around, a lot of great ethnic food, probably what I miss most.

it had a kind of New Orleans feel to it.
I mentioned buffalo, but I think likewise it has a "so far behind that in certain ways it's actually ahead" feel
I was also the one that said blue collar- if New Orleans was a frozen tundra 8 months a year, it'd bridge some of the gap but generally beer drinking, hearty cooking, self aware of the short comings but intensely proud of the high points people

I live here now and have all my life because of the medical mart up here. It's a nice if you can find things to do and it's not to bad of a sports town either. The worst part is weather though as its unpredictable.

Cleveland is nowhere near a half hour from the Pro Football HOF but everything else you said is spot on.
Dude Canton is like 45 minutes worst case from Independence (which might as well be Cleveland). Most of the drive is suburbs and Akron, so it doesn't feel like more than 30 mins to me. Maybe I under bid the drive a bit, but saying "nowhere near a half hour" is a little extreme, and kind of splitting hairs. It's pretty fricking close to half an hour. There's not really enough time to take a good nap in the passenger seat, lets just put it that way.
