That’s not a bad idea

Not catching coronavirus from the cashier is compensation enough.

Not really on topic, but regarding the self checkout aisles it is insane that no matter when I go to the store the people trying to use them never know how to do it quick and efficiently. It's always an absolute time vampire if there isn't one open from the moment I'm ready to check out.
In their defense, those machines lag horribly and often require "assistance" over nothing at all.
They installed them at the CVS I frequent, and it flags me as needing assistance every single time. Just the other day I walked up, scanned a birthday card, and the machine starts flashing "ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED FOR THIS ITEM".

No but I should get a discount.

I bag my own even when I’m not in self checkout. These people simply don’t know how to box in and not use three times as many bags as necessary.

Most big grocery store chains don't train anyone for bag optimization.
Trader Joes and Whole Foods are the only two off the top of my head that do a good job of packing groceries at the counter. The fact that they use paper bags over plastic probably has something to do with it though. Paper is far superior to plastic when you are buying more than 2 or 3 things. It's also easier to Tetris stuff into the paper b/c of the rectangular shape vs small plastic bags that aren't really designed to carry more than a few items, rip much easier, and generally do a shitty job for anything heavy or box shaped.

I love bagging my own groceries. I can do it right and also avoid cashier interactions.

I think that’s great for an introverted person

I don’t take time out of my life to bag my own groceries. I save time in my life not accidentally getting stuck behind Ms. “I’m writing checks at a grocery store in 2020” and Ms. “I think I have a coupon for $.10 off my second box of Twinkies in this 30-gallon trash bag sized purse of mine, let me find it real quick”. All while a fleet of America’s best and brightest man the cash registers.

The incentive is not waiting in line, dumbass.
Except you have to wait in line behind dumbasses, often with multiple kids distracting from their already low level of concentration.

Cost of labor is built into the price of an item. Think they'll reduce the prices if you're doing self checkout?
I remember paying more to have an attendant pump my gas, but doing it myself got me a discount.

New Jersey has a law where you can’t pump your own gas
