Should Arabic numerals be taught in schools? Most Americans say no

Gray News) - According to a survey conducted by CivicScience, most Americans don’t believe Arabic numerals should be taught in schools.

The problem: That’s the numeral system we use every day. (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9)

CivicScience, whose mission is to power the world’s opinions and bring them to the decision makers who care, asked 3,624 people if schools in America should teach Arabic numerals.

By the numbers, 2,020 people said no, 1,043 people said yes and 561 people shared no opinion.

In simpler terms, 56% of respondents said no, 29% said yes and 15% chose no opinion.

Arabs did lots of great stuff for society before that Islam thing took off. Coffee and algebra were two of the biggest.

Well, that’s the fallacy of the poll.

Technically the numbers we use in normal day to day usage are “Arabic numerals”.

They thought they had a clever gotchya to mock the “ignorant” average American. And I don’t doubt that they have a lot of people in the poll who gave a knee jerk reaction to the concept of Arabic teaching in schools.

But in practice, the term “Arabic numerals” is most often used to apply to Eastern Arabic cultures and those are truly a distinct symbol for the meaning of each. So there is really no way to distinguish in the poll from the ignorant and the informed responses. They just all get labeled as ignorantly Islamophobic is a sophomoric joke.

But the reddit post Gnome stole this from probably didn’t discuss this, so that’s why he thinks it’s worthy of the lmao emote like the rest of the groupthink sheep

All I said it was obviously and deliberately shittily phrased to illicit a predetermined answer.

Additionally, for all we know, a preceding question involved teaching sharia law in schools.

It’s not insightful or novel to be aware that pretty much all polls are shams. There is an entire industry around how to build the questions to encourage certain answers. All I’m saying this was a rather transparent and hamfisted example of it.

Are you saying that in the common parlance, "Arabic numerals" are used to refer to Eastern Arabic numerals? I've never heard it applied to anything other than the Western Arabic numerals, which to me, have become synonymous with the term "Arabic numeral."

No, I’m saying it’s a best an ambiguous choice of words.

A simple search pulls up lots of references of “Arabic numerals” as being distinct from 0,1,2,3 in an educational context.

As for your example....my experience is the opposite. Although I’m not sure what you would refer Eastern Arabic numerals as in that situation.

Which is my point. Not to saying your experiences were wrong, but you literally can’t tell the difference between the informed and the ignorant with how the poll is phrased. Which was obviously done deliberately.

I’m sure I can find editorials of how this is clear evidence of Trump fueled Islamophobia if I cared to see it up.

Can’t a legitimate interpretation of the question is that these all taught?

Again, it’s phrased very vaguely. And in a “scientific” poll trying to prove a social point, that reeks of bullshite

Are you saying the poll question was clear and as a result responses couldn’t be warped by reasonably varied interpretation?
