Not sure if it was mentioned but was it determined if the shooter actually asked a staff to do something about the person texting? It doesn't say anything about this in the article. Not saying that the guy is justified in what he did but just think of what wouldn't have happened if the staff kicked the texter out of the theater or gave him a warning?
Police say retired Tampa police captain Curtis Reeves, 71, shot and killed a young father who was texting during a showing of the Mark Wahlberg flick 'Lone Survivor.' Reeves, a respected ex-SWAT team chief, is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of Chad Oulson, 43. A woman told investigators Reeves once followed her to the bathroom to confront her over texting at the movies
Yeah...he's got issues. From what i read there were only 24 people in the theater..why not just move?

OK.
Now, who carries their gun in their pants pocket (as the article described)?
Seems to me that left and returned with the gun in his pocket.

This makes it sound like the guy is actively looking for someone to provoke him or respond with enough aggression to justify shooting someone.

Yep. And he brought a gun to the theatre specifically to shoot someone who was texting.
You're in the movies in the suburbs. Why would you feel the need to pack heat?

I'd like for all the dumbass in this thread praising this guy to weigh in now.

I think it's pretty funny that the retired cop described the incident as "hit with an unknown object". You didn't realize it was freakin popcorn!?! He knew that if he said it was an unknown object then maybe it was justified for him to fear for his life. If he said it was popcorn then he would have no chance at getting out of it.

Yep.
That bit screams of seeking to get off by means of "stand your ground".
Perhaps some good will come from this sad situation and we'll see the end of stand your ground.

Stand your ground is a horrible law and is terribly enforced. Additionally, its existence gives psychos like this and some of the posters in this thread the license (in their mind) to seek out confrontation, as dead men tell no tails.
I get the intent of SYG and the Castle Doctrine, but there are too many negative unintended consequences.

It seems plausible to me that they are both wrong, with the killer being most responsible.
The guy who was texting should have humbled himself and it wouldn't have escalated. Even after the guy left and came back his pride wouldn't let it go.
The shooter is self explanatory for allowing it to get to that point also.
Both have responsibility.

i hope the judge gives him the maximum sentence (assuming he is found guilty, which seems obvious at this point). As a retired LEO he should know better than to put himself in this situation.
