Probably had a warrant or was violating parole and knew he was going away for a long time so just ended it (just a guess)

I can't think of a worse, more painful way to kill oneself than stabbing multiple times, especially in your own neck
This dude obviously had mental problems, but I agree with the previous poster that I wish all thiefs and shoplifters met a similar fate
