That sucks. A friend of mine worked as an EMT years ago. Loved the job until he showed up to a very similar call and the caller emptied a magazine through the door. Luckily nobody was hit, but he quit shortly thereafter and went to work in a plant.
Those guys/gals sign up to save lives, but don't expect to get shot at.

NBC 5 just reported that a woman saw a man laying on the ground with a gun next to him & thought he killed himself
She called 911 about a suicide, but they found no evidence of that. He ended up shooting a civilian & a paramedic per NBC local
