I’m going to be very honest.

My electric bill continues to go up (and for those they have gas it’s worse) yet I continue to fail to see these electric and gas companies make any real effort to update the grid.

Where’s that suggestion and pressure from the EPA?

A "recommendation" just means the ones in power don't have the ability to enforce it and make it punitive yet.

If they could get away with setting your thermostat, they would.

Don't you get it? These people are temporarily limited tyrants.

Richard Nixon did this years ago...and did indeed make some of these kinds of things the law...55 MPH speed limit, federal facility thermostat settings. They have never said boo about it being done in private property, however. They could care less what your thermostate is set at...they have experts in the field who understand HVAC systems and energy usage and made a recomendation based on facts. You and I can do what we damn well please.

If you do this WTF is the purpose of higher seer units?

I bet the assholes who came out with this "recommendation" follow this exactly!

None of those people in the government pushing for this follow these guidelines. The tell people "no guns", but are protected by armed guards, they tell people "no gas powered cars", but fly on private jets. They advise you to "sweat at night, sweat during the day", but you fricking KNOW they have their shite cranked down to 68 °F.

What do you keep your ac on?

You are probably right. They can't and won't and have never tried.

It depends on what AC we are talking about. In the house it is set at about 74 on all 4 units during the day and 72 at night....and about 68 day and night in the winter. 3800 square feet of conditioned space and the power bill runs about $200 a month. I also have a mini split in the garage but it does not run unless I am in the garage. The Department of whoever the frick can make all the recomendations they like...if its hot I'll turn it down, if it is cold I will turn it up...I ain't, however, concerend about costs...some folks are and may save a few bucks using these recomendations.

Would only be peripherally within the purview of the EPA...it would be the DOE and the regional power authorities who would be the driving regulatory body...and they have paid lip service to it for at least 40 years if not longer. Rate payers and voters have been reluctant to spend the money...and someone has to pay the bill. It certainly ought to be done...its going to take a lot of bi-partisan effort and that is in short supply.

Probably not at their offices. It is possible but highly unlikely. Probably more like 72-74. Lots of older women in those offices....

While you ain't wrong about the grid rate payers and tax payers are going to foot the bill if it is ever done and paying the bill is not supported by those who will pay the bill...doing the work? Oh yeah, were are all in on that...paying the bill? Wait a tic...that might mean I have to pay a higher rate or something? Thanks but no thanks. When we decided that utilities being market based we made our bed. It was the right bed but we now have to sleep in it...

82 during the day and 78 at night may make it easier. I don't like sleeping when it's hot.
By the way, they are gonna get us down here in the south. They are going to mandate that we try to live in a hot, sticky, humid, sweltering summers with no temperature relief. They may not even let us use fans. They are going to get our asses.

Or maybe I'll continue to leave mine on 70 all the time.

When they come down here, sweat all day, and then go to sleep in a locker room smelling 82* mold infested house than they can feel free to suggest how I should live my life. In the mean time, they may properly frick themselves off a cliff.
