An appeals court on Wednesday (Jan. 4) reinstated the conviction of a serial child molester from Maryland whose case was held out as a major success of a law to punish sexual predators overseas.

The unanimous decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit reverses an earlier ruling and means the former Maryland schoolteacher, set to be released from prison this month, will have to register as a federal sex offender.

In an 11-page ruling, the three-judge panel said Congress intended to give prosecutors more power to pursue U.S. citizens like Richard Schmidt who molest children in foreign countries.

This guy was arrested repeatedly in the 1980s for molesting young boys in Maryland. I don't know if the laws on this have changed since the 80s or if the crime was not viewed as serious as it is today (which I don't think is the case), but its a shame that he kept getting arrested yet he continued to have more victims..

I know someone isn't in their right mind to do these things, but its one of the worse crimes someone can commit.

If you are a parent and someone did this to your young son... Would you kill him without feeling any type of guilt?

I would absolutely have to be restrained if I found out before the cops or if I was ever in the same room as them.

Pretty tough to kill someone behind bars though.

I am talking about in the 1980s when this guy was repeatedly being arrested for the same thing? Just knowing the guy continues to be allowed back on the streets and continues to do what he did to your child.. I think it would be difficult to not want to hurt him.

Does this mean underage Thai ladyboys are off limits now? That's gonna really hurt their tourism.

We need to move to a more flat punishment for violent crimes and this needs to be classified as a violent. If we make punishments harsher we will rid society of this through long term, to permanent, removal or true deterrence

Some thing is seriously wrong with our system when a man repeatedly is set free after this shite. These people cross a line in their minds and they never rehabilitate.

Killing this kind of person is letting them off way to easy. Torture his arse to the brink of death for a long time.

Maybe I am missing something... and I know every case is different from the next, but a child molester is a child molester. No one molest children in self defense, no one is forced to molest children as a result of a specific situation, etc. If you are a child molester, you will always be a threat to children. Someone doesn't go to jail for 10 years then get out and all of a sudden not have the urge to molest children.

There might be some type of treatment for them, but its like a recovering addict. The temptation is still there and when it comes to kids, you don't put those people back on the street and say "they received treatment. There is a good chance they will not repeat their actions"

How any convicted child molester ever walks the street again is beyond me.

The recidivism rate is probably the highest for any crime. These people are sick and need to be put down, or locked up for life at a minimum.

The whole concept of registered sex offenders, as it pertains to child molestation, should not even be needed.

I agree with this.

Legalize drugs and make room for life sentences for the big ones. Murder, Rape/Child Molestation. We'll save a ton of money and have plenty of room.

I'd be OK with that, generally speaking of course. We all know there are innocent people/flimsy cases, so I'll just leave that grey area out for now.
