UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.

Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ?eco- refugees,' ' threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.

He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.

They certainly seem to think it does as they pump out a similar prediction every 5 years or so.

Man, that would really suck for people who don't have the money to fund their own exodus to higher ground.

Good thing I'm sitting 900' above sea level, with plenty of ammunition.

Even better are the doomsday predictions from the original earth day. We all should have been dead 30 years ago.

quote:

Ehrlich sketched out his most alarmist scenario for the 1970 Earth Day issue of The Progressive, assuring readers that between 1980 and 1989, some 4 billion people, including 65 million Americans, would perish in the “Great Die-Off.”

There are a few countries I would not miss.

quote:

The most conservative scientific estimate that the Earth’s temperature will rise 1 to 7 degrees in the next 30 years, said Brown.

quote:

We have no clear idea about the ecological minimum of green space that the planet needs to function effectively. What we do know is that we are destroying the tropical rain forest at the rate of 50 acres a minute, about one football field per second,? said Brown.

Is this still happening? Could be a problem.

The polar ice caps are melting though, right?
