My company hires consultants all the time. They charge whatever they want, and we pay it. They produce almost nothing. It's a good gig if you can get it.

Depends on what you mean by “consultants”. Most consultants I deal with are project management and more specifically tech implementation.

You have to make a lot of extra money in consulting to be able to afford the same benefits that most of us get close to free with a full time corporate job

I work in O&G and work with engineers who are employees and consultants. Especially over the last few years, I've seen several take jobs as employees over being a consultant at the very same company. Insurance, job security, benefits, etc. are all pretty big selling points. I made ~30k in bonuses/stock options/etc. that I would never have access to if I was a consultant in the same exact role and it was a pretty terrible year. Not to mention my healthcare is probably half the cost. Yeah, that consultant day rate looks great until you are sitting at home waiting for another project to join.
