4 channel or 8 depends on the # of cameras you plan on having. 8 is probably a safe bet if you plan on adding more than 4 cameras at a later time.

Don't go wireless. Get a POE system with NVR. You just run an Ethernet cable to camera and that's how it's powered as well, so you'd only be running that one cable.
Over on Reddit most recommend Hikvision branded cameras and NVR. Good quality and price.

LaView on Amazon is legit. They have some user friendly stuff including apps for your phones.

This. I have a Swann POE system with NVR and 8 cameras. it works well. The Swann cameras I have are rebranded Hikvision cameras.

I later added 3 wireless Ring Cameras but they are much expensive. If you're trying to stay around $400 go with POE NVR first

what he said.

I researched cameras a few month ago but never pulled the trigger. Seemed like every time I seriously looked at one someone would always tell me to spend just a bit more on another model/package. From what I understand is that IP cameras ($) are going to be the future. Price is coming down though. Main pro is the picture is much clearer. A camera doesn't do much good if you can't clearly see the person's face. The IP cameras really shine when those deets are needed to id a perp. I think a few IP's will set you back a grand though.
