Words don't exist in a vacuum. They serve to convey intent, meaning, belief, desires, etc
Language is incredibly complex, and to distill it down to "a jumble of sounds" isn't reality.

Being "offended" is a subjective feeling. If someone calls your wife a whore and your daughter slut, whether or not your are "offended" might be up to you, but that doesn't change the fact that the person who spoke the words, depending on the context, is rude, inconsiderate, inappropriate, and possibly subject to discipline. Your reaction doesn't necessarily remove all power from the words (I promise your wife and daughter will be pissed), because there are other parties - the speaker, your family, and people who may have heard.

Of course it isn't the stupidest thing I've read on here - hell not even today. I was just trying to prove a point. What I said was a judgement on his cognitive ability. It was inappropriate and out of line - not because of his subjective feeling, but because of the intent behind the words, the context, and the implications. Language is complex. If language had no meaning, or power, then there wouldn't be language. It would be pointless.
