Sears, Kmart locations in New Orleans area to close, report says

LINK

Financially troubled Sears Holdings this week announced plans to close 80 more stores, including a Sears and a Kmart in Metairie.

The Sears at Clearview Mall and the Kmart at 2940 Veterans Blvd. were the only Louisiana properties on the list released Friday. According to CNBC, the retailer told employees liquidation sales at the stores will start in two weeks.

The closings leave just 15 Sears stores remaining in Louisiana. While there is a location at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, most are smaller "hometown" stores, franchised locations that concentrate on selling appliance and hardware brands such as Kenmore, Craftsman and Die Hard. Locally, hometown stores are in Baker, Luling, Opelousas, Bogalusa and Bayou Vista.

It was always so dark in a Kmart. It’s like they wouldn’t turn half the lights on.

When Sears bought Kmart that was similar to a losers bowl. No body will really win at the end of the day.

The last Kmart I went in was the one on Clearview near the Long bridge.

No idea when that was or when that one closed. Anyone know?

Every year they announce the closure of hundreds of Sears and Kmarts. I'm always amazed there's any left to close.

The CEO was/is basically bleeding it out but keeping it alive long enough to sell off the brands.

Not being a jerk but I'm guessing you've never been out of a large city.

Small town America still has hundreds of stand alone Sears stores. It's amazing what that company once was and how it was destroyed. They had the opportunity to be Amazon before Amazon and didn't know what to do with it.

Back to the point though. Rural communities still have Sears stores. Even Louisiana.

I’ve driven past that Clearview Sears location a couple dozen times over the past few years, and have seen 4 or 5 people coming in or out during that time. Usually looks like it’s closed because nobody even parks on that end of the lot.

The little Sears appliance and tool centers are actually very useful.

It’s been 10 years since I’ve been to Kmart. I think I bought patio chairs and a hose at the one in Gonzales a long time ago.

indeed. Apparently the real estate valuations are insane. Don’t know much about finance or how to keep a corporation afloat in changing economic times, but it’s clear from everything I’ve read that this CEO never had any intention of reviving the brand. He was in it to bolster his hedge fund and to make shareholders a little money on the way out.

Not that there’s much he could have done anyway to save an aged brand that’s loyal patrons are on fixed incomes and are dying in bunches everyday.
