Kinda amazing how close their times are considering the distance

Not really.

The long distances mean everything gets averaged out, and you are pushing against the physical limits of the human body.

I've been following him. Pretty amazing accomplishment. I recently went to a more plant based diet with only eating meat at supper and sometimes totally meatless. About to finish Eat & Run.

One mantra I hear often on trail is to "hike you own hike."
Trail mantra needs work, imo.

HYOH is something you'll hear everywhere from the AT community, I don't think they'll change it anytime soon.

I was thinking that as well. JFD knocked over a day off the record when she set it in 2011.

This was pretty impressive but I think Kilian Jornet molesting the Hardrock record book again was more impressive. Crazy to think that two such impressive endurance records were broken on the same weekend. Although, KJ record wouldn't be as impressive, if he hadn't broken the clockwise record last year.

There's no "wrong" way to hike a hike

I attempted to Thru Hike in 2011. Made it to the Hudson River in NY (1401 Miles). It is 100% true that every hiker needs to hike their own hike. Even my cousin and I who started together had to part ways from time to time, ultimately in NY. But I am not a fan of the AT Time Records.

When you go for speed you don't get to experience the beauty of the trail. This guy didn't get to sit down and stare at scenery. He never got so entranced in the mountains that he set camp because he need more time to take in what awesomeness around him. He never took a nap next to a river or a side trail where you could swim and jump off rocks. He just missed the true beauty behind the trail.

The AT is also a social trail. I made some amazing friends from across the country, even a few from overseas. Speed hiking is a lonely adventure.

Its a great feat, that's for sure. But Speed was never what I wanted out of the trail, nor most people who hike. It was never intended to be a venue for competition. Its about a sense of adventure. A Chance to get away from all the stress and obligations the real work burdens on you. Benchmarks on the trail can become like benchmarks at school or work. I preferred the time to make my own pace. Relax knowing it wasn't going to last forever. Never wanted to rush my way though.
