quote:

The average liter of bottled water has nearly a quarter million invisible pieces of ever so tiny nanoplastics, detected and categorized for the first time by a microscope using dual lasers.

Looking at five samples each of three common bottled water brands, researchers found particle levels ranged from 110,000 to 400,000 per liter, averaging at around 240,000.

Much of the plastic seems to be coming from the bottle itself.

They were common and bought at a WalMart.

Researchers still can’t answer the big question: Are those nanoplastic pieces harmful to health?

“That’s currently under review. We don’t know if it’s dangerous or how dangerous,” said study co-author Phoebe Stapleton, a toxicologist at Rutgers. “We do know that they are getting into the tissues (of mammals, including people) … and the current research is looking at what they’re doing in the cells.”

Jesus. You can't even drink water from a bottle, anymore.

We should have stuck with glass for all our bottling needs.

I think we've known for a long time it's a lot better for you to drink out of other materials besides plastic.

One of my crazy exs refused to drink out of water bottles unless they were fresh out of the refrigerator and cold because “warm water bottles leak chemicals in the water and are bad for you”

Side note - I remember hearing Lance Armstrong, some time ago, saying that anti-dopers were trying to capitalize on this by testing blood and seeing if plastic nanoparticles were contained within. The argument would be that those particles came from an IV bag, thus doping.

Your crazy ex is sort of correct. You definitely should try to avoid drinking out of plastic water bottles that have been stored in hot places.

She wasn't entirely off base.

Did they do research so see if there were nano particles of glass in water from a glass bottle? I would assume there would be these particles from any source container

You completely missed the point. Even if it comes out of the refrigerator, that bottle was almost certainly hot at some point.

I quit using plastic years ago where I can get away with it.

We do have the kentood bottle stations. Maybe those bigger heavy duty plastics are not leaching shite.

Which would be all of them… that’s my point that it is stupid to worry about. Doesn’t matter if you grabbed it out of your fridge or not, it was stored warm and hot several times in its journey to your kitchen.

I only buy water in glass or cans. Figure my near ancestors consumed so much beer, etc that way and they seemed to be ok.

Having said that people buy way too much water when it’s basically free and safe from the tap.

That depends on your definition of hot. Water bottles could be bottled in the North in winter and be on shelves before Spring.

And it is accretive. Stored in hot storage once is better than twice. It is better for you to not drink out of plastic water bottles that have been sitting in your car in Louisiana Summers, regardless of where that water bottle has been before.

And these variables, along with your prior rebuttal, are why I said she was "sort of" correct.

It was a plus for my wife when I figured out she didn't like buying bottled water.

It was like the heavens opened up and angels sang and the Lord said "Here is your woman"

It can't get worse each time it is heated?

And that's not necessarily true all the time. The whole world isn't hot 11 months a year like Louisiana
