Scientists document symbiotic relationship between wading birds and alligators

The great Florida swamp is a terrible place to raise a family.
Wading birds with nests in the Everglades worry constantly. Bandits are everywhere. They steal babies and eat them, sometimes in front of the parents, or off to the side, where the crunching and chewing by raccoons and possums are easily heard.
Over time, a study released Wednesday says, egrets, herons, ibises and storks that nest on islands developed a strategy. They nestle on tree limbs near alligators, which chase and sometimes eat nest raiders. For that service, alligators demand a heavy price — some of the birds' offspring. That's right: child sacrifice.

What a pointless study.

So, God is to alligators as the osprey is to Abraham?

how do they know the alligators don't go where the birds are nesting?

Kangaroos are just as bad or worse. If they're being chased by a predator, they pull their Joey out of their pouch and throw it to the wolves to eat so that they can escape.
Damn nature, you scary.

To be fair the astute minds of academia have a lot of time to fill in between teaching 2, hour long classes a semester.

What grinds my gears is that they likely got a grant for this... meaning taxpayers helped pay for it.

i need to get in on one of these "studies".

I need to get into the business of pointless studies. I would do so half the price.

i'm going to ask to $25m to study why men enjoy having women suck their penis.

What if it's just a coincidence that nests that are close to alligators do not get raided by invaders as much but coincidentally, the young birds get eaten by alligators because they are close.

what if the alligators know that the nests attract some of their favorite foods and also provide some easy meals?
need to do a study to counter this study

Birds are dumb. It isn't like they are grieving over this kind of thing.

That is pretty wicked, but the vast majority of nature is all about self-preservation.
Although many animals will protect their young, few are actually going to die for it/them.
