I have a lot of old family photos that I want to scan and save to a thumb drive and a hard drive. And print a few and give to family members.

Also, some of the old photos are faded, and some have other issues.

I want to keep the price within reason, say $200-300 for a good quality scanner and a decent program/software to restore color and fix some issues like water stains, cracking and fading.

Would like to have a good combo scanner with a good printer to print photos.

TIA

Don't know about the scanner. But just using AI to clean up old photos is free.

my wife and I bought an Epson WF-7840 printer/scanner for the same project of old photos. the clarity of the scans on this machine is amazing, and for us well worth it. print quality for photo printing is great as well.

We lost most of my childhood pictures in Katrina. A few survived. One was from my first year playing football. It was just me standing with my helmet in my uniform. It was a typical 70's "blurry" (i.e., not 4K) picture that had faded over time.

About a week ago, I scanned it into my computer just using my Dell printer. I then downloaded it to ChatGPT and asked it to keep the same person and the same uniform (I described the original color), and asked ChatGPT to just clean it up and update it like it was taken yesterday with a digital camera.

It came out AMAZING. It really looked like a 2026 picture taken with a really good digital camera.

I have both a Brother MFC-L5850DW and a HP Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M477fnw, the HP is a nicer machine to scan single documents and photos but the Brother has a better software interface and the document feed scanning is faster. I don't trust HP with their online updates making changes to where your machine can become a subscription service too. I bought my parents the same Brother machine too after their ancient HP laser printer finally quit. If you are looking to print in color then Brother has a color laser multi-function printer but you are in the $700 range. As far as touching up old photos I've used Firefly a few times with decent results. I've got some very old photos and documents I will eventually be scanning into a digital archive and I'll probably look into a dedicated overhead scanner that has built-in tools and less chance of damaging things by trying to fit them on a flatbed scanner.
