Saw cremated remains being mailed today

I was at the post office today, and the guy next to me had a box in his hands with stickers that read “Cremated Remains”.
I chuckled to myself when the lady behind the counter asked him if the box contained anything fragile, liquid, perishable, hazardous. I was thinking the contents was already perished.
I was also thinking it was kind of sad that this old man had to mail the remains of his family to where ever it was going.
I left before him and saw a minivan hearse parked near me, then I realized the old man was from the funeral home.
I can’t believe human remains could just be shipped Priority Mail with the USPS.

They sent my buddy UPS from Washington State to Tennessee?
It's just a box.
It's just a box.

Was it a modestly priced receptacle?

May have been cheaper to just buy the urn its own plane ticket with the way prices are falling.

Did you know that live poultry can be sent via US mail too? You just have to time shipments so they don’t get stuck on a Sunday when there is typically no delivery, but with Amazon forcing Sunday delivery I wouldn’t see why that would be an issue today.

My father in law passed away while on vacation in Salt Lake City a few years ago. My wife flew out there the same day to be with her mom and take care of arrangements. She ended up flying back to Houston with her Dad’s remains in urn between her feet. I guess she saved on the postage....

I used to work at a funeral home. When the boxed remains get to the funeral home from the crematorium the box is usually still warm. It's creepy.

I have no bones with this

I had to ship both my parents remains to the location of their funeral. Its definitely strange, and thankfully something the funeral home took care of.

25 years ago I worked for Delta Airlines, there was a guy that came in once a week to ship Bull Semen, apparently there's good money in it. I don't want to know how he acquired it
A lot of weird stuff came through the few years I worked there, the most common was human organs, which had to be hand carried from point to point, literally used to ride in the cockpits with the pilots, never in the cargo bin.
There was also a guy that shipped live roosters to San Diego quite frequently, of course on the crates it said, "FOR BREEDING PURPOSES ONLY"

I retired from a major airfreight company based in Memphis. My first position there was working in the area that researched where lost shipments went.
There was a locked safe where unclaimed valuables were kept. In that safe were two urns with cremated remains, one that the address label was missing, the other was refused by the recipient AND by the shipper - not wanted by anyone. Imagine your final resting place as being unclaimed in a safe in Memphis.
They’ve been there for years, as the legal department said to hold them.
