The dead used to be commonly shipped in caskets in the baggage car of passenger trains. Don't know if Amtrak still does this. Possibly between major terminals but not intermediate stops as there is not enough manpower to unload one.

Had a relative die in TX and they were cremated. Went to pick up ashes and they asked where we were taking them and I said Kansas for burial. They notified me that I was required to file paperwork in TX, OK and KS if I was planning on transporting the ashes myself. I said OK and just stuck the urn in the back of the trunk. Apparently state / federal law doesn’t allow you to just drive around with human remains in your car.

Since the body is mostly water. Cremated remains are usually just the ash from the coffin or box plus the pulverized bones.

my dad rode around in my car for about 3 weeks after the flood of 2016. we were going to have memorial service that saturday. picked then up the thursday before flood.had to find urn in house after the flood and clean it up. at least i knew where he was at

Labeling it cremated remains pretty much gets more attention than Fragil, handle with care.

It's just ashes and the temperatures used are high enough to destroy any pathogens. Other than sociological concerns, it's really no different than scooping out your fireplace and sending that in the mail.
I flew across the country with my buddy's ashes once. I had a certified copy of the death certificate and the paperwork from the funeral home that cremated him with me. That didn't help much. I put him on the conveyor belt and, apparently, human ashes look real questionable on the x-ray. The look on the TSA agents' faces when I told them what was in the box was priceless.
The full court groping I got because of it wasn't. They touched me in places that you usually have to pay extra to be touched and they pulled EVERY SINGLE OBJECT out of my bag.
Oddly, they didn't make me open the box.
