People say stupid shite all the time for any number of reasons.

Most homeless people didn't make a conscious choice to be homeless
I've been looking at the world all wrong

And once you've been homeless and jobless for a given amount of time, it becomes nearly impossible to get a job. No phone, no home address, no mode of transportation (yes, many jobs require you to have a car), probably look and dress like shite, you may have references but do you know their contact info? etc. People always ignore this.
And what if you do get a job at McD's? You certainly can't afford to rent a place on your own and most landlords and/or roommates will want to rent to someone who has no recent history of living any place.

You're making a lot of ignorant assumptions.
I believe you're willfully ignorant.

and it is fine for us to agree to disagree. We have different experiences and came from different backgrounds that shape our opinions of the world.
I had a rough upbringing and had to fight my arse off for the meager life that I have now. I know what it's like to grow up as a kid having to hunt and grow a garden so that there will be food on that table that night. I've been blessed to never be homeless, but we put up one hell of a fight to get through what we were going through.
Point is I don't think there are a lot of mentally competent people who have as real of an understanding of what it takes to succeed when the odds are stacked against you.
I'm really not the smartest guy in any building I am ever in, but if I can figure out how to scrap through what we did, then I don't see how any mentally competent person can't. Put in the fricking work it takes and get your arse off the streets. It's sometimes very hard, but end the end it's that easy for the mentally competent.

Being homeless is like being on an extended camping trip. I love the outdoors.

Ohh i see. The OT has gone full ADD again i see.
Seriously. This is what you got from the OP?

Regardless of our philosophical/physiological disagreements, I respect this big time.

On the other hand it made me very bitter and callous, traits I haven't been able to change. I would much rather believe in your outlook, but that part of me is long since dead.

Not at all out to discredit you, just trying to give you a different perspective that it doesn't seem like you've considered.

It will always be about money if that's what you think it's going to be when you enter the conversation. I think when you make an attempt to have a real conversation with someone with money out of the picture - it changes the entire dynamic of the conversation.
If you're feeling whimsical, put on some of your yard work clothes and don't brush your hair and walk down the street talking to these people. I honestly think you'd be surprised by a lot of them and their stories.

you are either completely retarded or simply don't have enough time to properly respond to me.
The OP said only about being out in the cold with shelters available.
That's it.
Nothing about being homeless.Nothing about mental illness.
Simply, get out of the fricking cold.
Others here have tried to turn this thread into something else. Not me.

Read up on the author Dr. Sam Harris. He is a neuroscientist who explores the idea that free will and "the self" are an illusion. See what you think about it. Maybe it will help.

don't those shelters have rules? frown on drug and alcohol abuse? have limitations for how often you can stay? etc

see your above post.
The point of saying that is to get it out of the way that this conversation will not be about money. It's never about money. If they know that up front, the conversation looks a lot different.
But I do see the irony
