Anybody have any experience in the area? Thinking about going down there for a weekend soon. What are the good bar scenes/good places to eat/entertainment/ places to avoid?

Is it worth going? What area should I look to stay in?

savannah is a really awesome place to visit. 2 or 3 of our board regulars live down there.

LewDawg is one and he peruses this board every so often, maybe he'll see it soon.

Went there for 10th wedding anniv.

Savannah was ok. We liked Charleston better.

To this day, my wife swears there was a ghost in our hotel room (name of hotel escapes me but on the river and was once some industrial facility)

I work in Savannah. Stay on/close to river and Bay Street, most of the bars are between the river and Broughton, wouldn't wander much further than that at night. It's a cool town, lots of history, laid back. Personally I like Charleston better but Savannah has its up sides.

Stay downtown near the waterfront. Lots of good bars and restaurants in walking distance. Use the hop-on-off trolley to tour the historic sights.

I work there a few times a year. The further south from the river you get, the more your life is in danger. With that said, I have walked all around that bitch and I haven't had issues. And I am pasty white. Like Michael Bolten from Office Space white. Good food every where, so just Yelp some locations.

ETA:

I do drive out to Tybee Island and get some seafood. But it is a bit out of town.

Pretty cool town. A lot of the restaurants on the water have become tourist traps but there is still a lot of good places to eat. Like the others have said Charleston is better.

It's definitely worth going. It's a very nice, relaxed historical town.

River St. I would not venture much past that. Hilton head is nice for golf and family vacations.

If I would go back to Savannah, I would try The Lady and Sons Restaurant. Yeah, it's owned by Paula Deen but I know she can cook.

I imagine that it is soul foud. Fried chicken and mashed potatos and the like.

And it is in downtown Savannah.

Downtown and near the river can be quite nice. But the "nice" areas are fairly small and as others have said Charleston is probably better (although comparable) place to visit and is a damn sight better place to live.

But for a weekend if it's nice outside spend a day doing the "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" touristy bit, it really is a day spent well.

Come on down. Great eats all over town. River street, City Market for bars. Hell, there're great bars all over. Take cabs and uber if you drink. Definitely hit Mrs. Wilkes for lunch.

Might be exactly what an Ole Miss fan is looking for

And please do yourself a huge favor and stay away from the Paula Dean restaurant. Savannah has so many good places to eat, and that definitely isn't one of them.. Alligator Soul, Pink House, Garibaldi's, Crystal Beer Parlor, Green Truck...and that's just a few. Shoot if you're looking for a tourist trap, the Pirate House is even better than that place

I ate at the Pirate House just to say I did. It wasn't too bad. OP should eat at Treylor Park.

Heard good things about the Park but haven't been yet. It's on the list

ETA I've eaten several ghetto dawgs at the Rail before.. So my culinary judgement isn't the most refined
