Parts of Tonga are pitch black, like a moonless night. The sun has been completely blocked out by ash and smoke.

So the eruption essentially happened right at nightfall?

It has been erupting all day, I think. This appears to be the biggest eruption yet.

This is a video from earlier today:

There is a youtube newsman trying to cover the Tonga volcano. He's having to interpret twitter feeds and try to filter them live so it's a bit hit or miss, but interesting as it unfolds.

Maybe topic should be a new thread?

For anyone who may be interested, a massive volcanic eruption just happened near Tonga and a tsunami warning is out. It erupted earlier today as well. Some just unreal satellite and radar imagery has been posted on Twitter in the last half hour.

I can recall that in 2004 when the big earthquake that struck in the South Pacific on Christmas Day or the day after depending on your location, southeast Louisiana was in a cold persistent rain. Even the meteorologists were certain that we were not going to see snow. Then it suddenly changed to snow on Christmas Day around the time of the quake mid afternoon.

First, well if the meteorologists said it wasn’t going to snow, then surely snow never should’ve happened.

Secondly, I remember that event quite well and snow was never ruled out that day. In fact, it was hyped up quite a bit as it was Christmas Day that the potential snowfall was to occur. Snow was definitely forecast.

You’re probably right. It’s just you didn’t have have as much faux hype as you do now.

Imagine if you had Twitter and Facebook on that day back in 2004.
