About 8 years ago we painted patio with concrete stain/ paint. I absolutely hate it now.

Question: is there an large orbital sander I could rent that would take this layer off and smooth the concrete?

In the end I want to do an acid stain on it.

Not an orbital machine but looks like a floor buffer that can use a disk with 3-1/2 grit open mesh to resurface concrete. Not cheap to rent and you better have some experience to DIY. I have a similar problem but I'm going to borrow a heavy duty pressure washer and get a wet media blasting kit for it. Messy but less risk of gouging than a rotary machine. I'd test an area with a citrus-based paint stripper too.

The stain may have penetrated too deep into the concrete for you to completely remove appearance. They do rent the orbital sanders that come with "diamond" tip to level concrete and remove imperfections and such. You likely will end up painting instead of acid staining.

See if the ZEP stripper works for you first.

Strypease works, just don’t get any on you.

Dousing it with that and coming behind with a hot water pressure washer might work.

Have t seen in person but there are companies who can add 1/2” layer of concrete over existing concrete which you could then stain. May be cheaper option

Yeah it’s like resurfacing a driveway. No need to try and grind that shite off.

Ardex makes a product just frame it up and top it with a new coat of Ardex cheaper quicker and predictable outcomes

Pour new concrete over the top of it if you want bare concrete. I've tried cleaning stained and epoxyed concrete before, and it never worked. Always ended up going with new epoxy over the top

You might be in for some trouble trying to stain now since you'll have to remove paint and leave a surface suitable to stain. Any type of surface grinder is going to leave marks. I'm having to grind down some concrete to prep for the engineered wood flooring that I'm installing this week.

All those marks would stand out like crazy with a stain.

Was it stain or paint?

Just spray some Muriatic acid on it and pressure wash it off.

It said stain, but it was more like paint. A pressure washer will knock it off, so it didn’t penetrate into concrete. but honestly, that would take forever.

Thanks for all the info

No, just a high area. Don't want the transition to be that tall so just leveling that spot.

I'd give muriatic acid a shot. That's what we use on commercial projects.

That stuff will strip stink off shite.

I’m gonna check this out, might be best option. Only thing I worry about is the overlay cracking and flaking off existing concrete. Or will it bond to the other concrete

My first idea was to buy some nice Astro turf and cover patio. That way I could practice my mini golf techniques. Wife just looked at me stupid

Put some muriatic acid in a pump sprayer and spray the patio down. It might wash off with a water hose.
