San Antonio becomes first city in Texas to raise legal age to buy tobacco to 21

Council members Greg Brockhouse and Clayton Perry voted against the measure, questioning if the city should regulate such activity and expressing concerns that the new rules might financially harm smaller businesses.

It's pretty stupid. County is much larger than city and it's not like you can't go across the street

Its all horseshite though. Telling a 20 year old they can't buy cigarettes is just flat out un-american. Raise the tax, ban it in public areas, but what adults choose to spend their money on and do in the privacy of their own home is none of our goddamn business.

I don't think it's about government over-reaching here, and I'm politically moderate.
There was already an age restriction on it, they just raised it because of what we've learned about smoking and its effects. It's not unlike when the drinking age was raised from 18-21.
I'm sure there are some who think there should be no age restriction on those types of things (I thought this was America?!) but we need a modicum of "what's in the best interest of the public" mixed in there.

There isn't a need for any provision. Just go to a different town.
Also, California as a State raised it to 21. Military bases such as Camp Pendleton has to follow state laws.
So, no even if Texas went to 21, I doubt there would be a provision.

I'm guessing the thought is that it will prevent some from starting in the first place. The ones who are in that age range that are already smokers? Agreed. But who knows, maybe it'll help some of those kids quit (teenagers see value in it when you tell them they can't do something, right?)

I don't think there is a single gas station in the city limits of Alamo Heights. There IS one in Terrell Hills, if Terrell Hills goes along with this and bans it too, I don't know what the local Heights and Saint Mary's Hall kids are gonna do, I guess stop smoking blunts.

Yep I was going to mention the unfair tax they get.
Didn't know how to word it though. I'm sure it goes to the state and they receive it back, but shouldn't get the same as 18 sales.
When I bought them from there they were expensive anyways. Figured they'd be cheaper in Texas even with big city tax rates.
