I used to be one of those people who viewed suicide as a cowardly way out.

I'd say my views started changing when service members in my unit had killed themselves. This happened when I was in active duty, and another one was a kid in a reserve unit I was in. He was no older than 20.

I feel that no matter how bad life is, it isn't necessary to end it. That's a permanent solution to temporary problem. We do need more understanding about suicide.

But at least now I will listen to anyone that feels that way and will find a way to let them get the help they need.

RIP THF.

One of the more recognizable guys on this site. Whatever his struggles may have been, I hope he is at peace and his family and child find peace as well.

Also, the obit said he was survived by his fiancee and child, but after browsing his fiancee's FB, there are no pictures of the child that I could see. I wonder if they were expecting?

temporary problem

It is not temporary. It is very rare that one incident makes a person take their own life. It is a chemical imbalance and has been simmering for years.

It's easy to say that until you have felt that level of desperation.

Good times building that camp. There were times when it was too many chiefs-not enough Indians, but I took humor at the bickering, drank the beer, and made the most of it. Thanks for your help

While true, it can also stem from an avalanche of personal or professional setbacks and stress. The underlying imbalance may not go away, but there is often a catalyst or two that pushes someone over the edge.

In THF's case, it could have been stress from the CFA, coupled with the OUI, and throw in an engagement and possibly a child on the way and it was just too much too fast. It is so, so sad for everyone.

I tried to get across in those threads that the government needs to end(at least slow) the war on drugs and commit more money to education and rehabilitation. Every addict doesn't have the same addiction, and each of them needs to be rehabilitated in the way that fits them. Threads like those just show you how some in our society still look down on people that have an addiction, even though it is better than it was in the past. People shouldn't be scared to admit their problem, but they are because of the backlash they may face. Hell, I'm still not very open about mine, even after a year of being sober.

ETA: It just pains me that this could've happened because he saw no way out.

The CFA is grueling enough in the best of circumstances.

Of course it can be. Pressure and life can come at a person swift and hard. But, the depression has always been there, waiting to come to a boil.

I have periods of despair and depression, like most people. Seeing the aftermath of my friend's act has made me vow to never go that far.

I was only there for that day because I had a job at LSU the rest of the time but man I can imagine.

"Archy" was the dad right? It's been so long. I remember the son jumped on my back when the home run was hit and we were running around the bar piggy-back.

His high school English teacher posted this about Will:

When Will was in my class, he had a running joke of hiding my stapler. On top of things, in random places. One day, my bright pink stapler was hanging from the ceiling. When he went to get it down for me, it fell to the ground and cracked.
Years later, he showed up in my classroom with a fancy one touch pink stapler. He was funny and kind and generous and told me he owed me a stapler.
Teaching kids like William makes my job fun and worthwhile at times and hard and devastating at times like these. ?? Praying for peace for his family.
