Five people were missing Monday after an explosion at an Oklahoma drilling rig sent plumes of black smoke into the sky, emergency officials said.

The drilling rig in Quinton, about 100 miles southeast of Tulsa, exploded just before 9 a.m. while about two dozen people were working onsite, the Pittsburg County sheriff told KOTV. At least three medical helicopters responded to the explosion.

Seventeen people were accounted for - one of whom was flown off the site for medical attention - but five people remained missing Monday afternoon. The explosion sparked several fires and sent thick black smoke into the air. The derrick, a towering metal structure above the well, also collapsed.

I hate seeing stories like this. Prayers to the families.
And screw anyone who wants to turn this into a F250 baw thread or some kind of political bitch fest about oil and gas.

Is that normal? I always thought it was a smaller crew.

Thats normal. The main crew is smaller but there are additional support personnel. This is still a lot smaller then it was before some of the automation changes on the drilling rigs......

That's a normal crew size for a land rig with a man camp.

Terrible to see. Taking kicks is scary enough, I couldnt imagine the helpless feeling when it goes even further.

Thoughts and prayers that those missing can be found safe.

I've been on the same Flex rig twice when they let a gas influx make it all the way to the rotary table. It sounded like a 747 taking off and the flow line shot about 80 yards into a field. They were lucky that the well started spitting mud after the first gas bubble and we got it shut it in. Second time they got it on the choke before blowing any rig parts off but the entire rig was engulfed in a natural gas cloud. The Cyclone rig down the mountain from us wasn't as lucky. They burned it down but no casualties.

Friend of a friend on FB was on site and posted pics of the blowout. Here is his account

Tripping pipe, gas pocket followed them up. We’re changing the bha and after all said and done, went to renter the hole and when the blinds were open and such the gas hit em, static ignited it. Went on from there

Is this shallow gas yall are hitting?

With the technology today letting a kick get all the way to surface is quite hard without some negligence. At least in the DW arena.
