Because people really frick with each other in this industry. Nothing to it, just good fun. But his reaction to it will say a lot about him. Best just to take it and have a sense of humor.
The shut up thing is excellent advice for any newb at any job. Just be a self starter and a go getter and everything seems to work itself out.

They do work. Usually pretty hard. Messing with each other just makes it more enjoyable. If you've got the right mind set.
