My father had several RVs, the last being a huge diesel pusher (around 41-42 ft.) that was well over $300K. He used the frick out of it. Most places he went, he could have easily driven to in a car and stayed at a hotel. It wasn't like he took it to any remote places. He simply doesn't like staying in hotel rooms. He finally gave it up because that thing broke almost every time he took it out, including many major issues like brake lines and hydraulics. He'd have to haul it from Bay St. Louis to Tampa on a regular basis to get things fixed. Became more trouble than it was worth, and he lost his arse when he had to dump it.

For an average RV, I'd probably spend $30K+.

Try used Winnebago at best..

Is it really worth the cost?

Depends, My Dad has one and when he takes it on trips, fueling up is costly, He normally puts in over 100 gallons of Diesel

We could go on a bunch of family vacations for $30K.

True, depending on where you go and how frugal you are

And to answer other question, he barely uses his and is considering selling it.. but, 30k would probably not cover down payment

We use ours at least once a month. We figured if we were going to spend the money then we were going to use it. My daughters are always asking when our next trip is.

It's great to get away from the house and all of the crap that piles up and just go relax somewhere.

If you have a good tow vehicle, get you a Travel Trailer. Invest in one with a slide out. It doesn't seem like much but it makes a huge difference in the livable space when you get there.

We use ours about 8-15 times a year.

Had a 5th wheel toyhauler, but it was just too damn big and was a pain in the arse to get into tight parking areas. I traded it on a class C RV and have been much happier with it. Plus it's nice for the kids to be able to watch tv and use the bathroom etc. while driving.

I've been looking for a used bumper pull. I have some lake property and it would stay out there most of the time. And if we ever want to get away, we get away.

FIL has a Class A RV and he barely uses it 3 times a year. It's like 1k a year in taxes.

If I were to buy one it would be a smaller trailer type. Airstreams are pretty nice.

In some states you have to pay yearly taxes on vehicles. My GF is from St. Louis and she said hers were about $300 annually due at the first of the year.

No wonder so many register them in Montana.

My dad bought an RV that cost about $400k. I don't think he has driven it once.

when I lived in FL a few years ago my wife and I flew to Dallas and picked out an RV, it took about 2-3 weeks to get it in, we went back to get it, check in hand, about 200 grand, and the guy doing the walk around with us pissed off the old lady, deal was off, I thank God every day

why not?

They take a bit of attention, but are easy to drive.

He has always had an RV. I don't know, honestly. I'll ask him.

I would love to take that bad boy to the mountains. I think he would love that. Taking the grandkids, camping, spending time with one another. I'll ask him if he has time.
