Russian shipbuilding is a mess but their sub programs are fine.

So they have shored up their maintenance program since the fall of the USSR?

Those subs will have to surface to refuel.

It says it is nuclear powered.

If we know when it was launched and where, I would guess it is safe to assume we are tacking and monitoring.....

Back when I was a submariner (96-00), we had assets in place to tell us when a sub was leaving a Russian port

We worked very hard to ensure we tracked all Russian subs but specifically tasked 688's to follow boomers

I imagine this ship will get the same treatment

Question about deploying their "sonar net". Is it possible for USN to follow and negate their deployments? Either by sabotage or collecting their deployed devices? Can we locate them?

Seems like an easy signature for the Navy to track.

Look how tiny the US subs are.

If you track the ship well enough, you might be able to detect when it is deploying a sensor on the seabed

Exerpt from article:

The key elements of the Harmony are the robotic autonomous seabed stations (arse), secretly installed on the seabed through special submarines.

When in place on the seabed, the arse deploys a fixed multi-element and hose-type sonar antennas which are many metres long. These stations can conduct passive sonar exploration by simply listening to what is happening around them, trying to detect the characteristic noise components and mechanisms of ships and aircraft. The arse can also emit a special active beep signal, which detects and classifies surface and underwater targets.

Several arse combine into a single network to show the entire underwater and above-water situation in an area covering ??hundreds of square kilometres.

The equipment of the seabed station processes the received sonar information and forwards it to the command centre. For this purpose, the device contains a special pop-up buoy that transmits data via communications satellites.

Power is supplied to the arse by a unique lithium polymer battery with a control and monitoring system specially adapted to power the consumption needs of the seabed stations. Just over 30 cm long, the nominal capacity of this battery is 28 A/h, and the nominal voltage is from 58 to 80 volts. This power source can operate at temperatures ranging from -10 to +45 degrees Celsius.

On a command from the control centre, all the arse antennae can collapse and lower the communications buoy and return to the submarine.

Looks to me like the extended shaft and props were intentional just to make it "the longest". Dick measuring contest?

You are utterly retarded for believing this statement.

explain your counter argument

Here's my explaination

1. Ship deploys small nuclear drones before war commences outside Norfolk naval station. Drones purpose built to detect the acoustic signature of aircraft carriers. Carrier rolls in proximity, drone "activates" and immediately suicide detonates a warhead under the keel dispatching or seriously wounding the carrier. The important part is this ship can retrieve and maintain those drones offshore, underwater

2. Ship deploys mobile drone sonar network effectively detecting/tracking the movement of ship formations to be relayed in realtime to Russian antiship assets

3. Ship maintains the poseidon torpedos predeployed off US ports

All three of those capabilities are a serious threat to the US Navy. Russia is dropping serious money into its autonomous systems. This is not the 80's era Soviet Union we are talking about.

I know we always get caught in old timer stories in these sub threads, but what was your rate again?

I know the boys out of Pearl will have their eyes on this, as well as help from the JDF and the new Poisedons. You have to wonder if 7th fleet, being the cluster frick it is now, will impact our abilities to have continuous coverage on those bases.

I know we were stretched very thin when I was in (03-09) due to having to simultaneously track country x, country y, and country z’s subs in the Pacific theater.

Is SURTASS still a thing?

I get what you are saying and generally agree.

But just because we buy the fanciest toys doesn't mean they are invincible. We cannot let ourselves forget that critical fact.

I was a ET/Radioman

SURTASS seems to still be in operation per Wiki

My jaw hit the floor when I read that while we are increasing the total naval ship inventory, we are reducing our fast attack sub fleet from 52 to 42

Can’t build those newer flights of Virginias fast enough to replace the 88s that weren’t refueled.

While I’m excited about the Columbia Class finally replacing the Ohio Class, that’s just going to hamper the shipyards building the Virginias even more.

Do you follow “The Stupid Shall Be Punished” fb blog? Facebook, I know, but the moderator has posted several articles in the past month about this issue. It’s going to be quite a cluster frick.
