Just curious how the seafood industry is going to get destroyed by O&G doing poorly. (just an example)
Seafood industry? What seafood industry

Mothers makes most their wealth from tourists, not a few Shell employees who might eat there a couple times per year. My lord man

It will impact the seafood industry because there are fewer people in Houma with disposable income. Just like Mother's Restaurant in New Orleans will be hurt if One Shell Square closes. These things don't happen in a vacuum.
Almost everything will be impacted in south Louisiana if oil prices keep falling. Hopefully not as bad as the 1980s....Progress has been made in diversifying since then especially in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, but upstream oil and gas is still huge here especially in Lafayette, Houma, Broussard, etc.

That's a nice little writeup, and it's great that you work in commercial construction, but I think you confused yourself. I was pointing out the flaw in thinking that these workers are overpaid. They aren't if we follow the prevailing logic that many of the posters have cited-- something along the lines of "hurrrrr durrrr supply and demand. Tough luck baws!"

Yeah I should have probably said insulated the most, and not not affected at all.

We've come full circle to 1986.

New Orleans tourism will continue...well as long as they don't let shootings in the French Quarter make it to national media too much.

There will be less money spent generally in LA so everything will hurt.

I'll tell you what, I work for a major crane and rigging company in south LA and we haven't slowed down at all.

Last time this happened in the 1980s, I was too young to realize how bad things were. Combine that with a world-wide economic downturn (which will impact tourism industry)....and it could be very bad all over south Louisiana for a few years. I think we are already rapidly headed in that direction.
Not to mention what this will do to the state's revenue- which impacts LSU, infrastructure, etc.

You are correct not all were flaunting their new found wealth.
It sucks for anyone to lose their job for something that is out of their control.
I currently have guys sweeping floors between their offshore jobs to make a paycheck. I don't want to lose those guys because at some point things will rebound. I just don't know how long I will be able to keep them.

I'm not saying it's going to happen to you or to your industry, but sometimes these things just take time. For your sake I hope it doesn't happen at all.

I can't for the life of me figure out why hotel employees, NOLA residents, or any other locals would recommend that place to anyone. The city has waaaaay better options to offer.

I don't know how that's possible but great for you

I think maybe 1 or 2 plants that we frequent have closed down, but unless the chemical companies start going down hill, we will be okay.

I have no idea how obamacare works or if it will help this situation but in the past the medical industry was most definitely hurt. No jobs=no insurance....no insurance means you don't see a dr unless you absolutely have to
With Obamacare basically forcing everyone to have health insurance this shouldn't be that big of an issue.

that happens, but good god it will be so beneficial in the long run.
Oh yes.
I'm not one of those STEM elitists. Colleges should offers humanities and arts degrees because they do have a place and contribution to our society.
But the ROI for a college degree has to be at an all time low. Most companies are requiring degrees, but pay is not keeping up with the skyrocketing cost of college. So you end up with graduates being saddled with monumental debt right out of the gate and making very modest salaries especially when the payment on that debt is factored in.
It's a sad cycle, because there's nothing you can do about it. Companies don't care how hard it is to pay for because they use it as free job training so they don't have to invest anything in young workers' training. And colleges have no incentive to competitively price tuition because they know companies are going to continue to send them an endless supply of kids trying to get good jobs.
