It's not just about the market - I think there are some limitations to the size of ships they can get up the river
Oh, and the only cruises that are trashy are carnival. They got that locked down.

All are in the top 7 nationwide.
Well I think there are probably only 9 or so cruise ship ports so that seems about right.

NOLA should be.

The main reason for this on the gulf coast are because of their 4 and 5 night offerings.
I'm not knocking people who take these cruises, but when you combine the fact that it's mostly cruises going to shitty ports in the western caribean, it is what it is.

At least he spelled my name correctly. That's more than most of the geniuses here can do.

You would be proud of me. I've been an on the fence and sometimes cruise bash guy, but I finally pulled the trigger. Booked the family on NCL out of Nola over Thanksgiving with a balcony.
My only other cruise experience was a 3 night trip out of Florida for high school graduation and I've read enough to give me the bad impression, but I think it will be fine.
Hell, I took the kids to the the Gatlinburg area for last Thanksgiving and it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.

Physical location and port size/ configuration does play a major role. I don't think it is even possible a ship in the Oasis / Allure size category is possible to make it to New Orleans up the river. Plus i am sure port size/ configuration limits certain type ships.
I am curious to all of the typical port demographics among similar size ships. I know ships out of Miami / Port Everglades and Canaveral have a significant European group and an even larger Northeastern group. These demographics will find it harder to get direct flights to the New Orleans or Mobile or Galveston areas.

But what about all those people that will never spend another dime in Nola because of the statues are coming down.

I've never been on a cruise, but if I did, I'd prefer a smaller ship -- say, 200 people.

It's too bad you won't be spending anymore momey in New Orleans. The city is really going to miss you.

I don't know. I guess the hand granade bars, t shirt shops, and Bubba Gump like places will still make it

Say, hello to the Viking river cruise ships of Europe.
Although, I believe they were to have one to go up and down the Mississippi.
The only problem with a small cruise ship number like 200 is typically those ships are very narrow in their demographics. River cruises probably have 75% + travelers that are 55+ in age.
There are also some "specialty" type cruises that will have younger groups, say the adventure cruises where you go out in groups and rough it more, like repelling on the islands when you get there and the ship itself is very basic.

You'll enjoy it. I've done NCL out of NOLA right after Thanksgiving.

I hope the cruise terminal gets moved down to the old Port of Embarcation down by the Industrial canal...although the NIMBYs are already complaining, there is adequate parking already and the basic infrastructure is in place...
It's where troop ships and military transport ships were loaded in NOLA, shipped a car from there when I PCSed to Germany in 1979

Will it sail to the same tired ports as Carnival?
Posted on 5/1/17 at 10:18 pm to shutterspeed
They all go to the same tired arse ports. NCL does have their new little private place though
