i'm a very forgetful person. I thank God I raised my kids to adulthood without something like this happening. I'm pretty sure i would not be able to live with that guilt.

I legitimately get queasy even reading an article about it happening to someone else. I hope to never find out if I could deal with it.
From here on out my wife and I will have multiple kids going to daycare and what not. I'd imagine that provides an added layer of prevention having two or more kids in the back seat.

For instance, my wife takes our 17 month old to daycare every morning, but every once in a while she will need to go in to work early and I will take him in.....and after spending half an hour fighting traffic, listening to talk radio, etc., it is easy to fall back into your normal morning routine. There have been a couple of times that I have exited off of the interstate and turned right to go to work instead of turning left to go to daycare...fortunately I have always realized it, but it scared the shite out of me thinking about what might have happened if I had been running late to an early meeting or something like that.
I have started putting my briefcase in my back seat next to the car seat every day, so that I have to see an empty car seat before I walk into the office.

Holy crap! There are many ways to escape responsibilities. Not saying any are completely acceptable but killing a kid is a little extreme.
Yeh, if true, he needs to be introduced to the biggest meanest psycho in the joint, tonite, dressed in a tight leather skirt and a blonde wig.

I can't, and I'm tired of fricking saying it. All it takes is paying attention to the very real fact that you have your own child in the backseat with you. If that's too much for someone, then kids are probably not their thing.
Not once...ever...and it wasn't even close...did I forget my children were with me. For frick's sake...the lengths people will go through to excuse the inexcusable shite we do...

Years ago I drive all the way to the office with my 8 year old in the back. I drive him to day care every day and it still happened. He was playing on his ipad the whole time with headphones and didn't realize he was back there until I grabbed my backpack out of the back seat. Something I started intentionally leaving there after all these cases in the media.
I got thrown off because my route had to change due to an accident that shut down the road I usually take.

I agree with you to an extent, there is never any excuse, whether it's an accident or not.
I have had something similar though. Holiday leave, wife was off work for a month or so and there was no dropping off my 1 year old at daycare during that time.
Get back to our normal routine, one morning I'm thinking about the job just driving in, reach the work parking lot and realize he's still in the back seat.
Very unnerving feeling.

I never said it was an excuse. I'm just saying no one is above it happening. Because it only takes one time. I always talk to my toddler in the car so it's very unlikely I would ever forget he's there. Plus, he's super chatty. But I hope I never EVER become complacent, and then I'm the one saying I thought it would never happen to me.

You've already explained your situation, and your situation isn't close to the dynamics usually at play when this happens.
Every parent in the world has a momentary lapse. It doesn't take rocket science to realize that tragedy can strike if things line up a certain way.
