Exactly. The theme you'll often find in these tragedies is that it happens to the family you'd least expect. The people who understand that it can happen are often the ones that actively guard against it. The ones who think all you have to do is keep your kid as the #1 priority at all times and nothing bad will ever happen are the ones in the news each summer.

i forgot to strap the car seat in once when my oldest kid was just a few months old. Turned a corner and it tipped over. No injuries, just scared her.
I spent the next few days thinking about what could have happened.Never forgot again. just pure luck it didn't end worse.

There are no excuses. The thing people should take away - this case notwithstanding - is that it can happen to anyone. The only negligent act is failing to realize it can happen to anyone and developing some sort of system that helps address the real possibility that it can happen to you.

People love to get all high and mighty on other parents when the fact of the matter is that the "bad" parents are the ones who got unlucky. These situations are slightly different, but sometimes making your child the priority is the stressor itself.
I agree with those that suggest there is no excuse though. There shouldn't be an excuse once you understand that simply loving your child at all times does not actively prevent this kind of thing.

FWIW, GMC is shipping all 2017 Acadia's with a rear seat warning to help prevent some of these tragedies.

I get what you are saying, however, I have a hard time believing that it can happen to anyone. It happens to selfish people who put their needs/wants before their children. I'm sorry but I would never say that it could possibly happen to me. Not even a remote percentage of a chance. That may seem like it comes across as being holier than thou but it is a fact. I will never understand how someone can be that irresponsible.

My 22 month old never shuts up. Plus, he likes to try to get out of his car seat, so if we're driving more than a mile we have to constantly look back to make sure that he isn't putting himself in a dangerous situation.

Prosecution wasn't seeking the death penalty. He'll never be free again though. Three of those counts carry a mandatory life sentence.
