OTC Advil with instructions to take 4 every 4 or 5 hours. That reduced the inflammation and took the pain away. Lucky my stomach survived 3 weeks of that much Advil.
I've been taking (and still am) 3 Advil and 2 Tylenol every 6 hours. This combination works to help with the pain.
My dentist said I could switch to 2 Aleve in the morning and 2 Aleve at night, and mix in 2 Tylenol every 4 to 6 hours in between. Going to try that.

Advil is hard on the stomach. Hope that's short term source of pain! Once the nerve is burned out, it will never hurt again.

Yes, absolutely. I plan to be done with any pain reliever by the end of this week, at the very latest.

I've had 3 done over the last 16 years. None were worse than an ordinary filling, just lasted longer. In the last year the two oldest have failed and been pulled. It turns out my experience is par for the course. You might outlive your root canal tooth.

No. I have had 3 of them and wouldn't call them any more painful than any simple filling.

grew up going to a dentist that did not know what novacaine was
That’s unacceptable.

No...?
I've only had one root canal, but it was trip to the endodontist who did the root canal, trip to the dentist for a temp crown, trip back to the dentist for the permanent crown. You went to the endodontist twice for the same tooth?

Needing a root canal that is untreated hurts like hell. Had one many years ago and two dentists couldn't locate which tooth it was. I couldn't drink enough to dull the pain. The increasingly strong pain killers had little effect.
Third dentist was a root canal specialist. He took a little rod of ice and touched it to my teeth in the area where it hurt. Boom, that lit it up and identified it.
The root gets infected and inflamed causing swelling that presses on the nerve. Every heart beat brings a spike of sharp pain.
My experience as well. Another bonus is that the infection will cause the tooth to lift up away from the jaw line so you're clanging your teeth together when chewing or talking.
When I was in the throes of the infection, I would've entertained an offer to rip my lower jaw off my face. I had bone loss around the two roots from the infection (both teeth had root canals about 20 years ago) that you could clearly see on the xray. I'm hoping that will grow back now that I'm fixed.

They aren’t painful. Everything is deadened. For some reason people associate all the pain and aggravation that leads up to getting a root canal to the actual process itself.
It does take a little while, though.
