Well right now you have liability insurance meaning that if you frick up while your texting, smoking, and drinking a big gulp in a car with no cupholders and run into the back of somebody, your insurance pays for the damage to the other vehicle/person up to an agreed upon amount because you were being a dumbass. If suit is filed against you your insurance company defends you in a negligence action.

Take the same scenario except the car is driving itself. You were texting, smoking, and drinking a big gulp in a car with no cupholders but it doesnt matter. The car was driving itself meaning the "car" was negligent, not you.

Therefore, every accident on the road would be person A v. car manufacturer, not person A v. insured person B.

Sure, but those are closed systems. What most contemplate when we think of a world with only self driving cars is an entire network where cars are essentially data points on a grid. It may be difficult, but hacking into the network could cause mass chaos.

Plenty would still own their own cars, but plenty who currently have their own car would opt for on demand options.

One thing I've read a little about is the fact that the source of nearly all organs for organ transplants is from car crash victims, so when driverless cars become the norm this source will be virtually cut off.

On the bright side many believe that whenever this happens, the demand for organs will be so great that it will be the final push necessary for synthetic/3d printed organs to be perfected.
