It's also possible that HC's owner knew that he could use the inevitable outrage as leverage to shame the LL into more favorable lease terms.
100% the truth.
Clarke knows what he is doing. He knew his lease expired next month. He knew his his 'loyal, but broke' customer base would mobilize behind him.

Something like $450 in extra rent monthly. Hopefully all of these vocal super-supporters that have come out of the woodwork will now support their beloved place in a way that actually means something.
If it means that much, IMV it shouldn't be the responsibility of the property owner to just forego more money that other tenants would pay. He isn't the one to whom the place is bringing all this enjoyment to, and he didn't open the place as some type of charity.
The shop owner should be willing to pay the property owner what the space is worth. And the people enjoying the place should be willing to help the shop owner do so. Otherwise the "value" they are claiming the place has is bullshite when push comes to shove, and all they really want is for the property owner to subsidize their enjoyment.
I don't have a strong tie to the place, so I have only a weak preference that it stay there. So I'll go buy something there today or tomorrow as a small show of support, although I'm not signing their petition. Hopefully the real supporters are as solid as they act like they are.

maybe if you hipster fricks actually spent some money there instead of getting a black coffee and mooching on the wifi for 5 hours, then they would still be able to keep the doors open.
