As weird as it sounds, there were probably thousands of old people who were taught how to connect to the internet like this and only use it to check their email and have done it like this without thinking about it for 25 years.

Millions of people in rural America will die because that’s the only way they get information.

Doubtful. He's got a harem of old hoes. It’s pretty legendary. There are a few people on here who know him. Dudes been pulling mad trim since grandma passed.

I miss AOL and Yahoo’s old chat channels. They were a lot of fun. Basically IRC for non- computer nerds. The closest thing that still exists are Youtube’s and Rumbles chat columns during livestreams.

I used to take those free trial CDs from the grocery store once a month. Forgot to cancel once and got our phone bill charged to $200 just from connection fees lol the joys of being a teenager in the early 2000’s

AIM was an incredible device when I was in college. Setting an away message with what was going on or where'd you be was clutch.

I remember in high school.. Maybe 10th, 11th grade.. This girl I was friends with was the first person I knew who had the internet. Her dad was some type of contractor who worked with several plants and I remember her telling me about email and I wasn't a computer person at all before the internet so it was all foreign to the teenage me. One night we were on the phone and she was going into the chat rooms and I thought it was so awesome that she could talk to people from across the US and many countries.
Then it was probably within a year from that my dad told me we were getting a new computer so we could have internet. I really thought it was truly fascinating to have this computer where I could talk with people from all over, read about anything of interest. Then as more and more people got it, everyone started messing with each other, creating fake screen names to IM each other and try to get the person to think you were someone else, but it was always obvious because it would be like "Hi. how are you?" "ASL?" "I am 18F you like doggy style?".
Then I guess it was what? 2001-2002ish when cable modem was available? I remember being able to get it pretty cheap through LSU and that was when AOL died to me.

Pisses me off to think about this being political, but with it just now closing down it does make me think they were likely getting Grant Money to offer service to someone somewhere…

The only reason I got it was because of the discount you got if you were a LSU student. It was like $20.. a month. I think it was much more expensive without the discount, but it was a game changer.

Mannnnn. Can’t believe it was still going.
AIM was really the best. The Mizzou (1998-2002) ladies didn’t disappoint.
Lots of laughs when reading through this thread. What a time to be alive.
