Riegel: The difficult realities of living in south Louisiana

This article comes on the heels of several topics on this very board in the past couple of weeks regarding leaving Louisiana.
Things aren’t getting any easier, especially with the exponential increase in crime, and lack of career opportunities for many people not in the petrochemical industry.
quote:
Baton Rouge Area Foundation released its 2021 CityStats report, which contained one particularly sobering statistic: 60% of parents want their children to leave the parish and live elsewhere when they’re adults, up from 45% in 2019.

People don’t leave Louisiana and they really don’t like their children to leave. So you know things are bad, when a sizable majority of poll respondents want their progeny to seek a better life somewhere else.

All thanks to dogshit leadership from JBE, Destroya and Broome who are all more worried about social justice and making their DNC overlords happy than improving quality of life
Mississippi and Alabama are now far past Louisiana in quality of life

I’m 100% on board if my kids decide to leave this state after high school. There are way too many opportunities elsewhere for them. The leadership in this state has failed miserably over and over again.

Very sad but true- My wife is from lower Alabama and it's amazing how much nicer it is over there.

Without all of that..hurricane season or rainy season isn’t the ideal time for a poll like this. It would be like asking residence of OKC if they want to leave the area in the height of tornado season in April or May. Or asking people in Seattle if they want to stay in the middle of a grey, dreary winter.
But yeah, then you have the crazy progressive politics that are infecting seemingly the DA’s office in seemingly every decent sized city. That just compounds the negativity.

Shut up about Mississippi. Don’t let the secret out.

Stop. The leadership has been an issue for decades. Including when Bobby Jindal was in office. Louisiana is a dump because no one there in power gives a shite, and those who do give a shite aren’t willing to grapple for the power. The State is a mess and that hasn’t changed since 2004 when I first got there. And it was a mess before then, too.

Stephanie Reigel and get fricked and get the frick out of Louisiana. She can take Chris Tyson and Gary Chambers with her.

That is an astonishing number…even for EBR. The other 40 percent are those that don’t pay taxes. The last tax payer that leaves needs to remember to turn off the lights. The Democratic leaders in this state and parish will flat out ignore that statistic.

My wife, a non-Louisiana native, is beyond ready to leave the state. The only things holding us back are (1) My family and aging parents live nearby; (2) we both have been at our current places of work for several years now and "starting over" somewhere new may not be all that easy; (3) my children are starting to develop strong friendships in school and it would be tough on them to move them out.
But the reality is my argument for staying here is becoming weaker and weaker. Under the current leadership BR is becoming more and more of a shithole with no end in sight. For a while crime was largely confined in "bad areas". But now there are shootings in major commercial areas (Seigen Ln.); Petty crime in nicer neighborhoods; Numerous bums at every major fricking intersection; the need to spend several thousands per year to send your kids to private schools; over-inflated housing prices because of the lack of nice neighborhoods. It's becoming harder and harder to justify staying and I foresee encouraging my children to leave the state when it is time to attend college.
The only hope I see for EBR is if the St. George "city" comes to fruition. Will it be Nirvana? Of course not. Buy my hope is it could become something closer to what you see in the burbs of Jackson, MS, or Birmingham, or Memphis. Otherwise, BR is on the fast track to becoming just another moderately sized southern dump.

Many people stay in Louisiana to be "close to family". No worries. I'll move.
Me: "Kids. I encourage you to leave the state. If you want to be close to us due to grandkids. I'll move to where ever you are."
Kids: "Why didn't you leave that shite hole sooner? Why did you make me grow up in a shite hole?"

Classy.
Why don’t you opine about the actual article instead of belittling the author?

It’s gotten way worse in just the past 3 years.

Yep…it’s definitely spilled over from NBR. I held out hope that St George would buy us more time, but it’s entirely too late for that, even if it does ever happen. With that said, my wife and I are moving to Naples, FL next year. After 50 years in BR, we’re done!

My kids better have a damn good reason for not wanting to leave this hillbilly shithole. Lord knows I'm gone the second I retire.

My nephew will graduate from LSU next year. He’s already said there’s not a chance in hell that he will stay in LA.
