Both mediocre commanders. Sherman has zero impressive victories and if Grant was a commander in WWII then American forces would have sustained Soviet-tier casualties against the Wehrmacht.

Another person who knows bupkus about the Civil War in general and Grant, in particular. Grant was a master of maneuver and logistics. Also, his cooperation with the riverine Navy on the Mississippi was pretty remarkable.

Protest then.

Before this year it took an act of the legislature to remove this statue. That law changed to allow localities to decide on removal. My protest is to vote against people who changed this requirement.

See above. I see no reason to provoke. The law is the law. If I felt strongly about it I would commit civil disobedience and serve my time for committing a crime.

I am sad that a piece of Virginia history is gone. Removing the statute does not change history no matter how much people may try to sweep it under the rug. It seems to me that we are acting more like Russians or Chinese taking down statues of Stalin or Mao. Removing statues does not change the past. It saddens me that we have come to this.

Then why does anyone care that they're gone?

Uh-oh.

Here comes logic.

Many people do not. It's not the biggest deal in the world to me. I just think it's sad that we are removing pieces of history. Where does it stop?

You want to remove Civil War statues? Sure, I get. However, this is such a simplistic clichè argument but where does it end? Is the “associated with slavery or segregation” the line? We’ve seen calls for Jefferson’s image to be removed. Isn’t the LSU “Tiger” mascot have a history with the Civil War?

It’s just pretty clear that won’t stop.

I've been saying plantation homes will be an eventual target.

It will not stop. The mob always needs a focus for their anger.

I'm not sure, but I hate using the slippery slope defense regarding something so trivial.

I understand that's theoretically how it starts, but I trust myself enough to know when it's time to take a stand.

The huge carved Lee monument at Stone Mountain near Atlanta is probably up for defacement soon.

It's already been proposed to essentially blast that monument off the face of the mountain

I'm not sure that it is trivial, but the removal of that Confederate Statute in Alexandria, Va., was a legal act. I do not know what to do to really protest it. The statue was to be removed next month but The Daughters of the Confederacy removed it early as they thought it may be defaced.

The issue as I see it is what happens when someone says, "MLK was anti-gay, his memorial should be taken down". Some people were suggesting that since Washington and Jefferson were slave owners their memorials should be taken down. What if someone decided that a United State Marine committed an atrocity and wanted the Iwo Jima Monument removed? Where does this end?

I do not have the answers, but I do not see removal as a good answer.

It kind of points out how dumb statues are. Plenty have been taken down.

You may be right. But who should get to make that decision?

They've been artwork for thousands of years. I think abstract paintings and sculptures are dumb.

They basically already are. People are going after weddings & other events being held at them.

I think if it gets taken down it should go in a museum along with other confederate memorials.

That’s where they should all go. They have no place on government property. They lost. Get over it.
