this does not excise lee from the history books or historical narratives, only a memorial that commemorates lee's memory in a particular fashion. that is what is being removed, and that is what was removed at lee circle as well.

There's still Washington & Lee, although the students and their parents like to hide that by calling it W&L.

It was a civil war and people made choices they didn't want to have to make. He was from Virginia and he chose the South. Unfortunately people like yourself have no clue what its like to defend and fight for a country.

Nah man. He should have picked the other side, marched right into his home state, and started offing his friends and family. Right?!

I wish ppl would stop for a second and realize the men who bled on those battlefields weren’t there by choice. They weren’t the ones who owned slaves or made any political decisions. They were thrust into a horrible situation and deserve to be remembered with some respect.

There are museums that hold a bunch of tanks, planes, minisubs, dinosaurs, cars etc. I’m sure one could hold a fricking statue.

And those museums were built to specifically house tanks, planes, minisubs, dinosaurs, cars, etc. What museum are you going to stick a random Confederate monument in?

Just seems weird to have statues of Confederate generals. There is no reason to honor them like that.

Just seems weird to start rioting and looting after the death of a known criminal that spent years in jail. Just saying?

99% of the people with a strong opinion about a statue either way are typically full of shite.

Nah. Nola has some real problems, like keeping it above water, and their mayor made statues a priority rather than the well being of citizens property. They were also lied to about funding the tear downs and where the monuments would ultimately wind up. They have a right to be upset.

I have a degree from Washington and Lee. And I call it Washington and Lee. As do my classmates.

This is dumb. They all happily volunteered to fight for their respective sides. No one forced them at gunpoint to enlist. The Spirit of '61 was a rabid time in American history.

Fine. Move it to a plantation garden or something. Idgaf. I just don’t think it should be just melted down for scrap.

They were put into that situation by men like Lee.

He's the one who conscripted them into service.

Not true.

Especially towards the end of the war, the South conscripted the vast majority of their forces.

I'm not talking about 1864/65 - I'm talking about the initial call up in April 1861 when both sides thought it would be a gloriously short conflict, decided in one major battle.

Imagine that you’re a citizen of England. Suppose England joins the EU. Suppose England decides that the EU sucks and wants Brexit. Suppose the EU creates an army to stop Brexit. Suppose that army decides to invade England. Suppose, as a citizen of England, you’re asked to lead the EU’s army. Suppose you turn that down to fight with England because that’s your country. Suppose 150 years from now, you’re called a traitor.

That the closest comparison I can come up with for a citizen of Virginia during the 1800’s.
