Same… kind of wish I went this route.
(Other than kids, wife, etc…. It if they could stay the same..)
Scored high on the asvab. (?) test. So recruiters said I would start off at x position ( which I think is better gen normal… idk, 25 years ago)
But I was told to go to college.. it didn’t matter for what… just get a degree.
Yea I’ve never had to sweat, etc… but now I see all my buddies who barely passed high school making more money than me.. had to work harder at first, but now they are bosses, supervisors. Etc..
Yeah unfortunately that was all parents / teachers told us to do. Go to college. No other advice on degree, paying for it, jobs etc. I tried it for a year and said hell with this and enlisted. Teacher, parents all told me I was making a huge mistake but it was easily the best thing for me.

best case you retire young.
With how much to live on?
Pension is 50% of average of last three years pay. Some VA disability payments on top of that.
When I was a PFC at Camp New York in 2003 a reserve LTC who was a financial advisor gave us all a class on personal finance. It was all new to me but it stuck and I invested steadily since then so if I wanted to I could never work again. I get bored quick though and have seen a lot of guys retire and die so going to make sure I stay engaged.
On the money side - I've seen O6's who retire and have to move and take a shitty job because they live paycheck to paycheck and I've seen E7's retire and volunteer and work part time at Home Depot.

My son graduates from HS this year. Going to college for an aviation degree because he wants to fly. Scored in a really high percentile on ASVAB and is in great shape…played football all four years.
I’m leaning on him hard to consider the military. Rather get the best training in the world than pay by the hour for flight time.
Of course the whole idea of getting shot at in Iran is a thing…

Free 30 minute motivational speech on how you better not frick up this weekend, every Friday afternoon. They really knew how to get their hooks in me.
Haha yep. Every time I thought about getting out I couldn't think of anything better to do.

Only job where you can get paid on Friday, spend it all by Sunday, and be fine because you're in the barracks and can eat in the DFAC. Was always funny as a Joe buying stereos / video games etc off guys and then selling it back to them after payday.

Not to be nosey, but what was that last 3 year average salary?
And what was a typical day in the back half of your time there?

Why lean on him to enlist?!
Why not an ROTC program and come out an officer?

One of my buddies here in Nevada is a retired full bird colonel. He spent his last 5 years working in the Pentagon. Sometimes I take him out to lunch just to hear the stories about his life in the military. The guy travelled the world and has lived as fascinating life.

Too many of the first to count. Not enough of the second to lose half my pension.
You got yourself an upvote on this one! That second one has claimed a lot of pensions. Congrats for sticking it out. I did the 4 1/2 for my Military service.
