If you are determined to stick to one of those locations I would recommend buying a lot with power and sewer then dropping a camper on it. You can get the hell out at any time and if you get the itch to go somewhere new for a few weeks or months you can.
This is what we do. We have a 42 foot park model RV on a lot that I can pull out of there when storms come. It’s like a small mobile home and very comfortable for the wife and I and two guests. We’re usually fishing, boating, or at the beach anyway.

Owning a camp requires very expensive flood insurance or you pay cash for it and roll the dice.

the price of a place + insurance. Not sure it’s worth it to retire there.

For the love of God, this. After watching 2 duck camps get destroyed from Ike and then Harvey, I could never justify ever owning another piece of property that could get wiped out by a hurricane.

I used to live in SWLA many years ago. That's the way I remember Holly Beach. There were a few camps being reclaimed by the GOM also.

Nobody’s picking Holly Beach and that’s fine with me. Personally, I think it’s a great little beach. It’s bigger than any beaches on Bolivar or on the other side of the ferry, in Cameron (Rutherford).

It’s relatively quiet and pretty peaceful. I do all I can to support it and the community. It’s not the Holly Beach of the 80’s and 90’s. EVERYTHING was wiped out by Rita. There’s nothing more than 14 years old there now. It’s not the shantytown it once was.

We camp on the beach a few times a year in our camper (RTT) and visit with the locals. I also host the Jeep weekend event there in May every year.

Bayaks is a large convenience/gas store that’s 17 miles from Holly Beach in Johnson Bayou. Brown’s Grocery is 18 miles away in Hackberry. Rouses is 35 miles away.

I’d say the only real con: very expensive to build because of all the new codes since Rita.

Holly Beach is like pulling up to a sandbar in the middle of a river.
