You're still not obligated to leave a tip. It's there as an option in case some do tip.

I frequent a small Cajun take out restaurant that is basically a portable building with no seating inside or outside. It's open 6 days a week and they have no employees....just the owner. He has a huge tip jar on the counter. I've never put anything in the jar but last time he laughingly said "feel free to to throw all that money you got in the tip jar". I put a $5 in it and will never go back. That's tacky as hell, especially for a business owner.

I try to leave a tip at the counter. Young ladies don't cook my food but most of them are trying to go to school or better themselves. Since I am a regular customer, I usually get my iced tea for no charge. Why not show appreciation for people who stand on their feet all day ?

Counter service? Sure, I'll tip them a dollar or two.

Can think of a bunch like this in Dallas. Twisted Root, Chip's, Texadelphia and countless more. Tip jar can suck it.

I fricking expect these things at any restaurant and if they're not there, I walk out the door.
Tips be damned.

Love threads like these, shows all the cheapskates on here. I couldn't imagine being cheap enough to bitch about tipping.
A) Tipping is retarded.
B) I have no idea when it's socially acceptable to tip and when it isn't. Why would I tip a restaurant that doesn't bring my food, but wouldn't tip the Walmart person cooking the rotisserie chicken?

Slipping them a little something because you are happy to get a clean table in a clean place, and good food and drink seems fair.
Tipping is moronic. Pay waitresses and waiters at normal rates.

Tell Scruffy I said that sounds fine, but that is not the system we currently have.
Lead the tipping revolution, Scruffy.

I worked at a sandwich place in high school and we had a tip jar on the counter.
We by no means expected a tip. It was just if you wanted to throw your spare change in or felt like putting in a dollar or two. It was really appreciated.
At the end of the night when we were counting the money the fun part was counting the tips and splitting it up amongst ourselves. It was maybe only a few bucks for each of us at the end of the night but sometimes there might be $7 for each of us and we felt like we hit the mother load.
I'll usually tip a bit at those places because I remember how much I appreciated it when I was in high school.

This is a frequent practice.
Minimum wage counter help will steal from owners by " giving soft drinks NC if you tip counter thief"
So yeah, tip that thief!
If you were ever in the restaurant business you would feel differently!

There is nothing tip worthy occurring here.
That being said, if I go to a restaurant where the food is awesome, the cashier is friendly, and I know I am going to be a regular customer, I may give them a couple of bucks.
Understand that the food would have to be great, the portions like they are feeding family, and priced to guarantee my return. A great overall experience is worth a few bucks.
