Good quality, high MERV rated filters won't cause a problem. Crappy, cheap filters will cause a problem.
If it doesn't fit right, it's going to make noise and not filter correctly anyway.
Interesting side note, the MERV rating was developed by Merv Griffin, the entertainer and producer. He had severe allergies.

You are correct with a media filter. "Merve" or minimum efficiency reporting value, basically is the surface area of the filter. Ever notice how some filters have more pleats than others? They will have a higher merve rating meaning they trap more and hold more contaminants. The down fall to this is it can strain your system and cause a negative pressure spike. These "media" filters combat this somehow by the way they are constructed. These thicker filters have a higher"merve" rating if you want to look at it that way based off the old methods. Sorry if I confused you.
If they said to get a media filter, then that's what you need to get.
ETA: the media filters cal last longer than regular filters because bacteria can't grow on the "media" like it can with the normal box store bought filters. So make sure you are getting the right product.

My A/C guy says he uses the cheapest blue filters and changes them out every 2 weeks during summer. That's what I do.

We have the 4" filters in the AC unit that I chnage every 6 months. That being said I use the cheapest thing I can find to put at intake vent which catches the bigger dust particles. Makes the 6 month filters last 6 months and protects the ducts

I use cheap ones from amazon. Change once a month in summer. Probably every 3 months from oct-march

I have a 5" media filter at the front of the air handler that I change 2x per year. It is an accordion style element that goes on a reusable filter rack.
I have 2 returns with the cheap blue fiberglass filters that I replace bi monthly. This quiets down the return and is kind of a "pre filter" for the media filter in the attic.
The blue fiberglass filters are commonly called "rock catchers" by those in the industry. I am amazed at how much dirt gets by the blue filters and ends up in the media filter.
On my last annual service e the evaporator coil appeared as new.
